If I wanted to play this game today, what would be the best route to go? Do I have to go ps1 or rom or is there a better option?

Best option is to play the War of the Lions remake on PSP or Vita.

If you want to play the original PS1 release without the improvements, then you get it on PS1 physically or as a Playstation Classic on PS3/PSP/Vita.

Play the PSP version on PPSSPP. They fixed the translation errors.

I played it on my phone 5 years ago. Obviously that's not the "best" way to play it, but it's certainly easy.

I tend to black that out. I can't imagine playing a game like that on a phone.

It's available on iPad also if you have one (even an older one). I have it and it works pretty well with the touch controls.

Very good and addictive game!!

I don't really like gaming on my phone but this would be a good type of game to play. No need for quick, precise movements

One of the GOAT. The iPad version is solid, for sure. All of the Squaresoft games that made it to Android/iOS were good.

I catch hate for this opinion, but I liked this FF the best of all. So much depth, story, content, etc. for the time. Still holds up well for the strategic types today also.

This was the only FF I have ever played.

Is this the only one that was turn-based and area battle?

Nah, there was a FFT A2 on the DS and it was solid, too. The addition of the field judges with win conditions kept it interesting.

FFT A2

My favorite DS game. I wish Tactics could get a new release but I don't have alot of hope in the quality of FF titles anymore.

There are two Tactics Advance games on Gameboy Advance and then the second on DS. Those are the only turn based strategy RPGs. There was Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings on DS which was a real time strategy RPG.
