Can you just buy whatever classes/races you want? The freebies aren't overly appealing, but I wouldn't mind doing a beastlord again.

I don't know how robust the mercenaries system is, but you could possibly get a slower/haster there.

The only Mercs are tank, healer, and caster or melee dps. Mercs make the game insanely easy into the 60's.

I am going to throw this out there. If for some reason the AlKabor server is saved(not looking good but there is reasons for hope) I suggest we go to that one. It is the best server since it is stuck in time and frozen at PoP. The main guild called Temetry just got into the Plane of time this week and the community there is second to none.
Yes you will need an intel based Mac but it is well worth picking up a cheap one on Craigslist if you can.

I ended up downloading EQ2 for shits and giggles and got to say I'm having a blast, may not even go back to EQ at this point

What it means is that if you want a true classic everquest experience you can play on the Mac server.
It is capped at Planes of Power and will never move past. Only one guild is in the plane of time and they just got there 2 weeks ago.
It is EQ hard if you want to think of it that way. No hotzones, no froglocks, no new bazaar, no guild halls etc. If you have an intel based mac there is no reason you shouldn't be playing EQ anywhere else.
And it is free to play, all races, no coin limit, no class limitations, no marketplace ads, nothing, nada.
Just free as in Free Beer free.
