Post-playthrough review...
Overall, I feel like From balanced the open world progression with dungeon-crawling and boss difficulty.
Story-related bosses were mechanically challenging with expansive move sets, varying timings, flask punishments, and phase shifts.
The art and music departments are the stars of the show. The world is beautiful, desolately so, in some areas. The scale is amazing. And being able to actually traverse virtually everything you see is a huge accomplishment in open world gaming. Armor and weapon design is well done from the basic to the eccentric. I feel the boss scores are some of the best under the From umbrella, especially during phase transitions.
Story, optional quests, and combat are what I expected. Again, the main story progression balance through the open world was handled really well.
I was disappointed with reused assets in the crypts and mines in particular. I would have liked the number of crypts reduced with a little more depth, unique bosses, and more impactful rewards. I do think the mines were a nice touch for upgrade materials. I'm sure the crypts were the same for spirit ashes.
Short-term, Elden Ring has ruined other games for me. The sense of exploration on the player's terms, equipment diversity, build diversity, boss fights, etc. are unrivaled in the current environment. I'll be gearing up for a NG+ run for a second ending, then a full NG playthrough to complete all achievements soon.
Well done, From. I can't wait for DLC.

I'd say that's a spot on review in terms of how I view the game as well.

somewhat off topic, but I'm running a NG+ effort on Demon's Souls to get to platinum and I am getting absolutely destroyed and one-shotted by enemies...especially in 2-1. When I did NG+ in Elden Ring, I think I was so overpowered by the time I beat Elden Beast that NG+ was a cakewalk and I probably went through and beat all of the mandatory story bosses, and the game, in less than 10 hours. Not the case with Demon's Souls.

100% spot on. I’m finishing up my first DS3 play through and will be doing my fifth play through on Elden Ring. Such a great game with so many great moments. Love just exploring the open world and trying different builds. I will probably do a pure strength this time.

Yeah, once you fall in love with From games everything else just pales in comparison.

Strength builds have gotten much better since launch with some balance patches

Nooooooooo.
Sellsword Twinblades are soooo OP.
I ran through my first ever DS3 playthrough back in May with ease using them.
What level do you have them reinforced to right now?
They absolutely MELTED everything I went up against.

So I speedran to get to the 4 belfries after stormveil to unlock mogh and stepped on the ledge at the chapel of anticipation. Yeah, you still die.

It's def tough on melee, but just stick with and learn their patterns. Don't be greedy.
But also, if you're not having fun w/ the Winblades anymore then just respec. I just reaaallly enjoyed them.

Cardinal rule for the Prince fight. It gets so tempting to go for that 3rd swipe on them. Hell, even a 2nd hit can be bad news for you. I played through DS3 twice and a lot of the boss fights I did a lot better with the 2nd time through, even 1 shot a few of them, but the Princes is one still gave me fits.
