I refuse to believe you can solo him with a no shield or parry build
Did it last night.
So I've played the entire base game + DLC just using dual-wielded longswords. With this boss, I was able to get through his first phase pretty consistently with minimal or no damage, but the fight was taking entirely too long. Would take me roughly 1.5-2 minutes to take out first phase, so the 2nd phase was just getting so tedious to learn. Decided to try a different approach - switched to 2-hand big bonk with a Bleed affinity.
My initial plan was to use this to just rip through the first stage at lightspeed so that I could spend more time actually learning the dodges in Phase 2; I didn't think for a second that a heavy weapon would be quick enough to actually use once the second phase started. I was surprised to discover that you actually could sneak some attacks in with a heavy weapon, so I switched from my normal light/medium loadout to something with a little heavier armor, protection talismans, and the talisman that strengthens charge attacks. Wanted to tank as much damage as possible while delivering charged R2 after charged R2.
This "end the fight as quickly as possible" strategy ended up working. The above clip has a few hiccups - I get caught on him a time or two while trying to roll, I have a few unfortunately-timed charged R2s, most notably the one right as he launches into the meteor -> afterimage wombo combo. I decided in the moment to tank the damage, stay laying down after meteors for the extra I-frames, then get up towards the middle of the combo to try and roll through a few hits. Got a little lucky with his chosen moveset, but feel pretty good about it overall. Fairly confident I can no-hit him on a subsequent run with a light equipment load and a little more practice
The true bullshite move he does is the one where he does slash-slash-cross slash. It's the only combo I haven't been able to perfectly dodge through, and I actually don't think it's possible with Medium equip load. I've seen guys do a backstep-forward roll-forward roll to dodge it, but they all had Light equipment.
ETA: I'm so upset that I didn't end him on that critical LOL. Would've been so satisfying to smash his head in for the W

Finally beat Melania! Took about 15 tries
Finally figured out my buffs were gone by phase 2. Applied during bloom and was much easier

Leyndell is really something special. Beautiful, well designed, great music, awesome enemies, great boss

From certainly has a hard on for dead dragons in the landscape.

It took me a long time to accept it. I never use shields, I always run light armor, always use high risk offensive rings/talismans like Radagon's Soreseal. Felt weird putting on a heavy weapon and damage negation talismans instead. And being slow af just feels wrong

I’m at ashen but now I’m going to go around map and get all items I want before I finish game. I’m overleveled for all the bosses.
Pretty pissed I didn’t know I couldn’t kill Mohg before getting white mask. Also didn’t get bolt of grandsax before ashen capital.

I’m running heavy armor with the mimic tear helmet to get my arcane up a little. Powerstancing bloodhound fang and Morgotts. Still am Med load as I invested in endurance bc of the stamina requirement for all my attacks. Close to 100lbs of equip load
Basically start with a jump attack then hit my bloodhound finesse and most bosses already at half or below at that point

Forgot to ask, what are you doing in the menu at the end of the fight?

Gold scarab talisman gives you an extra 20% runes when equipped. I just hurried up and equipped it. That boss gives you 500k runes, so I got an extra 100k thanks to it

How bad would the dlc be for a ng+2 character? I really don't feel like running a fresh playthrough before starting the dlc.

Finally took him down tonight. I too decided to go all in on a bleed hammer. I realized that I’m just not patient or consistent enough with my dodging to play an extended fight against him so I needed to go the fast as possible method. Several times I got him down to less than 5% health and would get impatient and die. Finally managed to keep my composure for that one time.
I’m a sick sick man. Just prepped a NG+ build focused on back hand blades and cirques, hand to hand and fists, and the night claw. Have a kitana ready to go as well and have a ton of points into health and enough in arcane to do the blood incantations and the dragon breath stuff. Gonna be a fun time

I'm level 101, 33% progression (whatever that means), and there is still so much to do. I can't fathom starting over.

Critical path to the dlc won't take long. I just don't feel like doing it

You just have to kill Mohg, right? Can’t you just do the bloody finger quest and go straight there?
Posted on 7/14/24 at 12:51 pm to Hu_Flung_Pu
I could. But I'm not trying to run the dlc with a low level character either.

What lvl? I’m at 150 and haven’t beaten the first time ??. I spent some time grinding cause I ain’t spending hours on a boss fight. Melania was the most amount of times at 15.

I think my ng character is 20 something
