I'm at 34 hours and just finished IGNs walkthrough and clearly they didn't finish lol.

I play about 2-3 hours a day. Just got to a part where there's some real shite going down

I'm about 22 hours in and feel like I'm just coming into the meat of the main story. It's a long game, but it's also pretty easy going and doesn't demand a lot from you.
I think it starts to get a bit more serious as you get the full party. Adds a bit more meaning to it all.

Oh, you don't need a walkthrough for Dragon Quest! Nothing is quite as fun as playing DQ underleveled.

This game just keeps getting better.
I was only using the guide to find collectibles I missed.

The four orbs part was a little unclear. That's the only thing I've had to look up thus far.

Agree with this. Found it just slightly underwhelming at the start but it gets progressively better as it goes.
Both in terms of story and difficulty. I actually wiped on two bosses recently, my first two wipes period. I also have had another 1-2 near wipes. I'm well leveled and geared too.
Seems they wanted to ease in potential new Western players sorta gradually so it starts on the simplistic side but gets better as is goes.

I haven't wiped to a boss yet, but I've had Veronica die on me more than a few times because of her low HP.
What bosses did you wipe at?
Posted on 9/13/18 at 4:47 pm to BulldogXero
I actually wiped on the two bird bosses really early because I didn't know there was a boss coming. I just walked through the door with protag and Erik at <50% HP. So I got smashed.

I may be overleveled. The Hero is level 35 and I just got the *final* party member.

Don't want to spoil anything, what was the last boss you actually beat?
The bosses that I actually wiped to were def. very late game, probably last 15-20% of so.

Yeah the first wipe for me was a fair bit after that.
Every boss before the mural one was complete cake. Since the mural you actually have to pay attention to strategy and have decent gear, as it should be.
I'm def. going to do another playthrough at some point with the stronger monsters option turned on. I like tense boss fights that come down to the wire and from what I've seen streaming, with that option on you get that pretty much every boss fight.

Finished the main storyline earlier today. In standard Dragon Quest fashion there is post-game content to do, and wow, probably the best DQ post game content ever.
I'm still in the middle of it at this point, seems like it's a very healthy chunk of content.
In reality it's more like part 3 of the main storyline, the third and final part of a three part act, and it's the best part too IMO. In no way would I ever view it as bonus or optional.
Without giving away any spoilers what they did with the story and world is really cool.
When the overworld music changed I had a nostalgia-gasm.

I just finished what I guess would be Act 2. This game makes me want to play all the others
Posted on 9/17/18 at 7:37 am to jsk020
Thus far, the second act doesn't seem to me as good as the first. It's mostly retreading old, albeit changed, areas so the sense of wonder and discovery is gone.

They do a good job of introducing a handful of new locations in each act so it's not just a complete rehash. Plus the world is changed so the places, while familiar, are also different.
If the credits rolled, you finished "act 2"
If you still have access to a PS2 def. play DQ8 at some point. It would be most similar to 11. It probably is the best marriage of old school DQ and modern gaming. DQ11 continues with what 8 built.
If you want the old school NES/SNES ones then 3 and 5 are your best bets.
2 and 4 are also good.
I'd only check out 1 if you care about the history of the series or JRPG's. It was great for its era but its obviously very primitive by today's standards.

Got to the witch last night and that was the first time I came close to wiping. I was 2 characters down and 1 more ice breath attack before I could get Rab to heal would have been the end. Thankfully, the witch was only one hit away from death too and I was able to get her first. Great game.

I have 1 on my phone, and I can see why the Japanese fell in love with it. It had to feel to them like Skyrim felt to us.

Jump in at DQ4-6 (on phone or on DS), DQ7 on 3DS, or DQ8 on PS2.

DQ8 is my favorite game of all time...it simply is amazing. I've been waiting for another game like it (which I think we finally got with XI). The post-game is the best part of the game.
I'm only about 20ish hours in on DQXI at the moment. I really want to savor it though
FYI, Lunar the Silver Star on the Sega CD (not the PS1 or PSP), was originally for number 1, until I played DQVIII.
