Dragon quest 12 finally gets shown off; SQE opens up about development timeline

First footage of what dragon quest 12 is going to look like released today.
Also the reason why it’s taking so long was revealed today. At some point since it was first announced 5 years ago development was totally scrapped and restarted from scratch with a new subtitle
quote:
As part of the big reset, the game's original subtitle has gone, and it will now be known as Dragon Quest XII: Beyond Dreams. The new name points to the game's story, which will follow a young adventurer whose sleep is being interrupted by strange visions. "What lies beyond dreams?" teased Horii. "Surely not a world of darkness, but a bright and exciting future." Read More: LINK
It looks incredible imo

I still can't believe I played DQ11 with the volume up for as long as I did.

The game looks great. Have they said if Toriyama designed the characters before he passed? Something looks a bit off with them to me

Well, they had promised some radically different for DQ12 but it looks like they changed their minds.
Based on everything that's been revealed it's pretty clear they didn't like how it was turning out and scrapped it all and are now doing something extremely safe and conventional by DQ standards.
I'm fine with that as I like DQ games keeping true to the spirit of the franchise, I prefer incremental type updates, but I had been curious to see this supposedly edgier take.
Kinda hate how the protagonist looks though. Not nearly as charming as most of the other hero designs have been, although I did hate 11s hair.
The dream plot is also a little surprising since it sounds extremely similar to the gimmick of DQ6 which involved a dream world mechanic into the story.
Regardless we're gonna go an entire decade between mainline games which is kinda ridiculous considering how formulaic they are so they really shouldn't take a decade to produce.

The only thing I dont like is the protagonist hair.
That has GOT to be changed and people need to let them know we dont want the kill monger cut in our DQ game. I think the rest of of his design looks pretty cool I assume thats the standard starting outfit.
The visuals overall are a lot better than DQ11 and I already thought DQ11 looked good.
It is going to be really hard to top that game though it was so good.
2028 is likely the earliest possible this could release because theyre not going to put it in the same year as a big FF game and remake part 3 will be next year. If this is all theyre comfortable showing though I still would guess later than that, 2029 probably.

Absolutely hated DQ2
I stopped after that.
Any other good ones?

Well you missed out on all the best ones.

are my personal favs.
11 is also quite good and the most recent one.
2 gets a bad rap thanks to how unrefined the leveling and difficulty scaling was, but it really introduced a ton to the series that makes it worthwhile. The scale up from 1 to 2 was incredible.
The weakest game in the mainline series is def. 7. An absolute slog to get through. Least interesting story and world, like 100-120 hours to get through and feels every minute of it.

I’ve been wanting to play the 1-3 HD-2D remakes for awhile. They look gorgeous. Anybody played them?

Well that’s disappointing to hear since they just put that dq7 reimagined out

dq7 reimagined
The reimagined part is specifically designed to address the major complaints though. For non purists it's probably gonna be the more enjoyable experience.
A few examples, it takes 2:30 hours to get to the very first battle in DQ7 original and about 20-25 hours to unlock the vocation system.
Reimagined they have it down 30 minutes and 10 hours.
They shortened some chapters and completely removed a few as well, throughout the whole game.
You can apparently beat it 50 hours now. They tried to just trim anything unnecessary or uninteresting.
