We are a month out from this releasing (May 15, 2025).

Other than seeing when they originally announced it awhile ago, I didn't follow any of the news regarding it. When I know I'm for 100% sure getting a game, I usually try to avoid getting information about it.

Well, turns out I was missing quite a bit this time around because this week I actually began catching up on all the latest info just out of curiosity and much to my surprise, the game is a radical departure from what most were probably expecting (including myself) based on the last two games.

I'll leave the deep dive up to ya'll, but they reworked the entire combat system, it's significantly slowed down compared to Eternal and the frenetic movement all over the place is also gone.

They have described Doom as "run and gun", Doom Eternal as "jump and shoot" and Doom The Dark Ages as "stand and fight"

The combat is quite strange looking for a Doom game. I have no doubt it will be very fun, id software has a great track record and this game will surely be good, I just don't know if it will be a good "Doom" game.

Seems like the shield is the primary mechanic all combat is based around and the melee attacks strongly compliment it. Weirdly enough the guns seem to be almost a total afterthought, they play mop up duty for the shield/melee attacks. It looks fun, but I'm not sure if that's Doom.

The dodging of and interacting with relatively slow moving projectiles all over the place. Once again, very strange. I find it to be too arcadey, clash of tones between world and demons and the widgets all over the place being bright and arcade like.

Watching the game play it almost looks like a rhythm game based on Doom. You basically tap the right button at the right colored indicator.

There was recently a big event where a lot of Doom community players were invited to play it and the feedback was all quite good, they all really enjoyed it. There are a ton of youtube videos of the various people there talking about it including their own gameplay footage.

One thing they all agreed on though was unfortunately the "variety" levels will call them. The giant mech suit and the dragon you can ride, nobody had anything positive to say about them, particularly the dragon levels. Everyone said they were passable at best and were relieved when they were over to get back to the standard gameplay. Variety for variety's sake is trap many games have fallen into it over the decades and it sounds like this game has a case of that.

So yeah, quite not as pumped as I was overall. I can appreciate them trying to be innovative and trying new things to make the games feel different and not rehashing the same idea. I'm also confident they will deliver a very fun game. However there is that danger that you can change too much and your innovation becomes bastardization. People who liked the previous game in a series expect something at least somewhat similar, that's why they are return customers. I personally would have preferred it to be a tad more traditional than what we are apparently gonna get.

Regardless, as a stand alone game I'm sure it'll be great and I'll still almost certainly get it.

Haven't really enjoyed a Doom game since the N64 version. Looking forward to Dark Ages. Game play videos look pretty good.

Doom 2016 version was an absolute masterpiece IMO. They nailed everything about it.

I didn't mind the game play tweaks to Eternal like some people did but I strongly preferred the overall tone and presentation of 2016 though.

Yes. I actually enjoyed the frenetic, high stakes gameplay of Eternal much more than 2016. Unfortunately, the baffling narrative decisions, overexplanation of things, terrible logs and codex entries, and general presentation were far, far inferior to 2016, so much so that 2016 ends up being the superior overall product. They took the "only thing they fear is you" line to "JP from Grandma's Boy" levels of cringe. Some of the audio logs with the scientist woman just sucking off the Slayer were LOL worthy. I refuse to believe Hugo had anything to do with those and that he let others handle writing duties since he had a ton of shite on his plate as Creative Director

What they did to Samuel Hayden is abominable. The way they have a time skip and just ignore 2016's incredible cliffhanger ending is shameful.

Both of the newer Doom games are great, but I do think 2016 had the better focus. Eternal got way too deep into the lore.

'16 set the stage early whenever doomslayer was smashing computers and destroying comms equipment because he isn't here for exposition, he's here to kill demons. In fact, the only true pause in gameplay for exposition that I can recall in '16 was a forced interaction with Hayden in his office.

Eternal disappeared up its own arse a bit with the lore elements. It wasn't bad, but I do think they lost some of the focus on what made '16 and doom as a series work. That said, I still enjoyed it for what it was.

Either way, I'm sure this third entry will be good, even if they deviate some for plot/lore purposes..

As a side note, what I really wish we would have seen rather than more background on the doomslayer's time in Argent D'nur or whatever the frick it's called would be a reboot of the original Quake. I think if they did a retelling of that story where you start as a somewhat straight forward soldier type and it slowly gets more psychological and strange as you delve deeper into the plot and explore slipgates would have been a solid follow up to '16 and Eternal.

Would love to see a remake/reboot.

I still think the opening of Quake 4 was one of the more fricked up cutscenes in history.

Yes I'm not a fan of the high fantasy concept they ramped up iso much n Eternal.

When I think Doom I think: industrial, military, and demonic. space sci-fi and horror aspects mixed in.

That's why 16 is such a great encapsulation of the Doom essence.

The way I would imagine my ideal quake reboot playing out would be something similar to how bloodborne introduced its arcane elements.

Play it straight for the first third and then adjust the weirdness dial up as you progress.

Could even tie in the strogg somehow as adherents to an evil entity within the slipgate which then would marry the various quake universes together

Pivoted to steam and I’m not nearly as prolific as I once was, so it’s petered out a bit

I really liked Doom 2016, but Doom Eternal was just exhausting to play

I will dabble in multiplayer some still, but it’s harder to coordinate with people post having kids.

I never really got into destiny beyond a superficial level, so I doubt I’ll do any more bungie content.

I am pretty open minded overall but if it’s a live service game with fomo elements, it’s hard to get invested at this stage. Can’t commit the time.

I really get into fromsoft titles. Still play cod occasionally. Play some coop arcade/indie/party type games. Some recent releases with coop elements like darktide or space marine 2 could be fun but I mostly play with randos or solo. Could be fun to coop baldurs gate 3 but I consider that to be a pipe dream at this point.

I didn't get to play much of anything anymore, started path of exile 2 but didn't feel like grinding.
