Don’t Nod, the developers behind Life Is Strange and the upcoming Lost Records: Bloom & Rage, is facing layoffs. The French studio announced on Wednesday that it was launching a “reorganization project” that could affect “up to” 69 jobs.

“Amid deteriorating results, and despite the actions already taken, the company is now compelled to consider a reorganization project to safeguard its competitiveness in an increasingly demanding and competitive ecosystem,” Don’t Nod said when reporting its latest earnings.

“This project could impact Don’t Nod’s workforce in France and may affect up to 69 jobs. An initial exchange took place today with the employee representative bodies, and an information-consultation process with these same bodies will subsequently be initiated regarding this project.”

Don’t Nod reported an 11% decline in revenue for the first six months of 2024. It also announced a write-down of €24 million ($26.1 million) due to the poor performances of Jusant and Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden. Another €7.6 million ($8.3 million) write-down was made due to the temporary pause of games P12 and P13 in order to “prioritize resources and maximize the chances of success for the most promising titles at present.”

I don't understand how it's possible for companies to blow millions of dollars on projects that any sane person could see are going to be commercial failures.

Isn't the goal of these companies to make a profit? You make good games that people actually want, people buy those games in large numbers, you make a lot of money.

Instead you look at most of these games coming out and the commercial viability of them seems to be a complete non-factor in their creation.

"We're may have to lay off some of you in a few months from now because the company is failing and we can't afford your union demanded pay rates"

"Oh yeah?! Well we strike!"

"Okay. The layoffs we were going to consider will now take place immediately"

I don't know anything about French labor laws, but people on Twitter are claiming French labor laws greatly favor the union's position and could make it difficult for them to proceed with these layoffs.

If these are truly necessary layoffs, and French labor laws really are as unfriendly as is being described, that could make the future of this company tenuous.

It’s incredibly, incredibly difficult to fire someone in France. Almost comically so.

Then hopefully they're overstating the necessity of these layoffs or they really, really did their homework.

I generally like their games. I haven't played Life is Strange 2 or Jusant, but I really enjoyed Vampyr and Banishers.

Outside of their narrative adventures games though, they typically don't make games that have just a whole lot of mass appeal.

Same reason some good movies cost 20 million and others cost 300.

Taxes.

Write offs.

Kick backs.

Life is Strange. All I know about these games are the Storymode/Internet Historian expleeneds. Great content on what appears to be terrible games.

I have enjoyed the Life Is Strange games so far. Haven't played the new one though.
