Cooling issue with a PC I bought my son

I'm an inferior console gamer, so forgive my lack of knowledge about PCs.
Found this computer for him online a while back and it runs all of the games he plays except on more graphic intensive games, it shuts off due to heat.
He can back the settings down but the games run perfectly with no lag when the settings are cranked up, the computer just shuts off at some point. Is it possible to put a cooling kit on it? Or is this computer just not capable of running certain games?

Download an app called MSI afterburner and watch the temps before it crashes and report back to us.
Look at the Video card temps and CPU temps

If the PC is "not capable of running certain games," the games are just going to run like crap. It's not going to cause your PC to overheat. Have you opened the PC and checked for dust? May just need to buy some compressed air and give it a good cleaning. Also, make sure all the fans are running.

Fans are running and we even took the front of the case off to allow maximum air into it. Everything looks clean.

The video card shouldn't be getting that hot. Manually put the fan speed to like 85-90% in afterburner and see where the temps go

Just to be sure, you haven't tried to OC the GPU/CPU before have you?

We haven't done anything to it. It's exactly how it came out the box.

Still got to 90C and shut off. It's only on certain games that are played on High or Highest graphic settings. If he drops them to Low, it's fine, but the game looks like crap.

Take your PC to a computer store

Could just be a thermal paste issue. It's not for faint of heart who arent into PC building, but a cheap try would to remove the cooler off the GPU, reapply some thermal paste, put the cooler back on and see if that solves the issue...as someone else said, make sure the PC is blown out from a dust standpoint as well. Low 90s is not good for a GPU. Should be at minimum 10+ degrees cooler in games.
Thermal paste is really cheap, so that's why it's not a bad idea to try that out.

Might have to underclock it a little.
Do you have afterburner up when playing a game?
Do you think you have a rogue program running in the background?
Drivers up to date?
