Nintendo Switch 2 won’t launch until March 2025 at the earliest, according to a new report.

Japanese publication Nikkei reported the March 2025 release window with much of the same information leaked so far: that Nintendo’s next console is a Switch successor with similar hybrid functionality but a bigger screen.

The Nikkei report does, however, suggest one of the reasons Nintendo has set a March 2025 release window is to ensure it can manufacture enough launch stock to satisfy demand and, therefore, combat scalpers. When the Switch launched in March 2017 it was almost impossible to get hold of, sparking a vibrant scalping market. It stands to reason Nintendo would want to avoid repeating the situation.

quote:

Indeed, Nikkei reports March 2025 is the earliest possible date Nintendo’s next-generation console will launch, suggesting it may not make Nintendo’s next financial year. Given the pressure Nintendo is under to release the successor to the near seven year-old Switch, a post-March 2025 launch would come as a huge surprise.

Sounds great to me, but it seems like a mistake to miss the Christmas season.

There has to be a new Mario title drop at launch.

I'm curious what the next Zelda entry will be, as well.

Nintendo let go of the rope, development-wise on a number of in-house AAA titles pretty early. TOTK was a glorified (and damned-near perfect) expansion/DLC of BOTW.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons only got one expansion.

Splatoon 3 is just now getting a single DLC for solo play.

No news on Metroid Prime or Wind Waker remakes right?

The hype will begin to build once they start showing off the new games.

They need to do it better than the Switch launch. BOTW being the only game worth buying at launch meant I waited for more games to come out before I got one.

Backwards compatibility would mitigate this for me somewhat.

Agreed. I have a massive backlog of Switch games that I'll likely never get to the bottom of.

Wasn't Mario Odyssey a launch game? I bought the Switch for BOTW, but I fell in love with Odyssey. I constantly found myself playing with a smile on my face.

Think that came out about 6 months after launch.

Ya I think it was BOTW, that abortion of a game 1-2 switch (Nintendo ripped alot of us off with that one) and I think Arms either was a launch title or right after.

If you want to sum up my major issues with Nintendo, use the fact that they are still listing this game at $50 on their store.

I got DK Tropical Freeze back on the WiiU and didn't come close to finishing it (yes...because the game was too fricking hard for me lol).

I've been wanting to revisit it on the Switch but they are still charging $50 for that shite (on Amazon...not sure what it is via other channels of distribution). The game made it through the end of WiiU and almost the entire life cycle of the Switch and is still nearly full price.

Not making the entire 3DS and Wii u eShop virtual console titles available on the switch was definitely a major pain in the arse, and an easily avoidable mistake Nintendo could have skipped.

That makes sense. I got the Switch Christmas of 2017 and only got Odyssey. I didn't realize it had just come out.

I also waited till the 2017 Christmas season. At that point Mario Odyssey, BOTW, Mario Kart, Mario Rabbids, and Splatoon 2 had all been released. It felt like a much more complete system.
