So, I've got 25,000 in coins just lying around. Do I upgrade my town center to the next level or should I bump up my gold storage to get 40,000 coins so I can submit my application of membership in the TigerDroppings clan? I'm thinking that upgrading my town center would be the better choice at this moment. Thoughts?

That will come...but I feel like it's pretty important to upgrade the Town Center to unlock some stuff. The coin should start flowing at a much faster clip.

i got attacked by 50 wizards......they didn't do much damaged at all. Are they not that great at attacking or what?

They do, issue is many can be 1 shot killed, especially if they are lvl 1

i usually don't even send stuff to ppl higher than me. i have been sending some lvl 3 archers to ppl lower than me

Join the clan, the request troops (via clan castle) and people send you troops you can use to either help attack or defend

Ah, seems I have much to learn from you all.
ETA: Other than the initial placement of your units when going on the attack, is there a way to "steer" them towards attacking specific things? It seems like my troops practically ignore cannons and go after the defenseless buildings. At the same time, they're getting wiped out from cannon fire.

Nah, that is joy of game, we can all offer advice and no one is correct everyone has a different style. I am a believer in upgrading storages/elixir/mines first and others on defense first...
My reasoning is later on when you do have high level items to upgrade you may have to upgrade storages first and then you sit with maxed out storages just prime for someone to waltz in and steal from you. Yet if they are maxed out it gives you more freedom to spend it on those other things because you don't have to worry about that. Plus at a lower level your not as worried about your storages getting ransacked and losing 100k or more in elixir/gold, you may lose 20k out of 100k you have stored
You just look for right balance...

What's the name of your clan. I searched all the ones on the first page and couldn't find but like two of them. Neither of them were yours.

Geaux: goblins always go for resources, giants defense, everything else just goes to what is closest in proximity. Something if you zoom in on base you are attacking you can pick the location better but there really isn't a certain way.
Me personally I try to hit a wall closest to mortars because if I can take them out early I can guarantee at least 70% win. Unless they have a storage that looks full and right by a wall so it is easy to obtain via archers. Send some barbs to one side as distraction and drop archers to destroy
