Does this annoy anyone else?

It always bothers me when a character’s clothing doesn’t change when you equip something new.

It seems to be largely a JRPG thing where only the weapon changes.

I recently bought Ys VIII and I noticed this. Also occurs in the Tales series.

Just seems lazy to me.

Huge turnoff for me. Gotta have basic customization.

Exactly.

Congrats on getting the Super Amazing Zeus Lightning Armor...and you are wearing the same clothes.

Come on.

Isn't that every FF game?

Not sure if I'd call it lazy, just a decision that was made. They have a vision of how their characters are going to appear and they stick to it.

Not anything that ever really bothers me. I'm playing AC Odyssey and every piece of gear updates visually and I'm really liking it. Even has a glamour system. Nice when it's there, but when not, nothing that annoys me at all.

It isn’t a game breaker for me. The Tales games are some of my favorites, among others.

I just don’t like it.

Give Scruffy customization!

I like it too, and I feel it's rare to find a game that doesn't offer some type of customization, but there's certain games where I'm not going to expect it.

Even Rimworld registers armor and clothing change in the graphics.

I was disappointed in Bloodstained in that regard, save weapons and accessories.

In Ys games, the weapons do change in some, but in 8, you're just upgrading the weapon. They at least do compromise and let you have costumes and outfits to choose from.

Also true for Tales series. Never bothered me too much, but I also don't really like to see the weird mismatched armors you see in some games.

When I first started playing the Witcher 3, I thought Witchers were like Jedi in that they would keep their swords as "their swords" and not just change out to anything they find thats better.

So that was a pleasant surprise.

Witcher 3's customization is the standard for how devs should approach having a set main character design. I'm fine with not being able to tweak the entire appearance of the character, but being able to choose how he wore his beard, hair, the armor he wore, etc. is the perfect middle ground.

JRPGs get away/got away with it because it was just never really a thing so it wasn't expected. That said I think if a game/character is iconic enough, it ends up being a good thing. Final Fantasy characters are great examples. Can't really imagine Cloud wearing anything else (outside of that dress ).

Taking this topic back old school, I can still remember when a character changing their appearance based on gear was a revolutionary feature. Size limitations made such a thing almost impossible in the first few generations of gaming. The early attempts were usually just simple color swaps (like Link's tunic changing colors).

One of the first games I played where I can really remember being impressed that a huge variety of gear had its own unique appearance on the characters was Diablo II.

It irritates the piss out of me but if the game is good (like most of the FF titles) it's just an annoyance.

Witcher 3 set the bar so high on graphics, gameplay, story and customization that I'm completely spoiled by it. Even the appearance of crafted witcher gear significantly changes every time you upgrade a piece, and it felt very real and looked great, too.

Then, I got really into FFXV and besides the same few, basic outfit changes, the characters still looked like an emo metal band. After literally days of spawning Angelus to get enough MSV2's for the entire group, it would've been nice if they at least changed apparel appearance slightly. The weapons do change, but because of the way weapons appear/disappear at the start/finish of compat, it's barely noticeable.
