I was listening to a podcast yesterday and they were reviewing horizon. one of the guys was saying it wasnt a bad game but that he was tired of large open world games and that the narrative wasnt good enough to keep him going ( he then went on to basically sing praises to elden ring...so whatever).

Got me wondering, are there genres you use to love that you dont play anymore. For me its fighting games. if there was a new game in the arcade i was up there putting my quarters down. My brother and i were pretty damn good most of the time. We even traveled to Atlanta for southern regional tournament for tekken 4.

i dont play them at all anymore. when the mortal kombat get reinvigorated with 10 i gave an earnest attempt to get back into th genre. got a nice stick and everything just couldnt do it.

Open world games can be fricking fantastic and some of the single best ever produce like Witcher 3, BoTW, Ghost of Tshushima, imo Horizon Forbidden West belongs here, and quite possibly Elden Ring to come. The problem is the genre is completely over saturated with sub bar Ubisoft style total crap.

To answer OP if there’s two styles I just don’t play anymore ever because they have become literally yearly incarcerations of the same things it’s sports and first person shooter games.

When I was young (middle school, high school) I used to play a ton of fighting and sports games. Every Madden and 2K game, every NHL or FIFA. Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat and Tekken. I have a friend that lives in another state and we will still occasionally text each other "I hate armor king and everything he stands for."

I never play any of those kinds of games anymore. I think my thing is they were fun to play together, like in the same room. Playing online loses something for me. I did buy fifa for the switch and it's a fun time killer but I'm thinking it's been 2 years since I've played it.

i think thats my case. its was fun as hell to see your opponent wake away in shame after trouncing them. equally as fun walking off the stick after a beating to pu your quarters back up up there and wait in line while talking shite to everyone else around.

sitting at home que'ing up online matches just not the same

Being married with 2 kids makes me appreciate first person shooters. Halo has been awesome. Don't have the time for massive open world games anymore. I expect Elden Ring to take me years to play through.

Yea its no so much that Ive tired of genres its just that I dont have time to commit to playing everything that interest me. My favorite games now are 12-20 single player games. If I'm lucky I get through one or two open world games per year.

Sports games - they’re the same thing year after year with incremental changes and micro transactions. I refused to be bilked out of $60 per year

Linear games - I’m sure there are still some great ones out there, but I love open world walking, exploring, and choosing my quest

Multiplayer FPS games. Battle Royales temporarily revived my interest but I'm done with them. I still play single player ones like Half life and Doom.

The only multiplayer FPS I ever have the itch to play is counter-strike.

Open world games can be exhausting and overwhelming.

I kinda grew out of turn-based rpgs.

I still love rts games, but I don’t think I have played any made in the last 12 years.

I don't really do FPS, RTS, or any sort of multiplayer anymore. I don't have time to get good at them. Give me the big, open-world single player games like Witcher/Skyrim or sandbox games like Planet Coaster/RCT where I can take my time and go at my own pace.

Sports games for me. When I was growing up we had tons of options for basketball, football, baseball and hockey..tons of diffrent ways to play.

Now it's EA and 2k controlling everything, they just copy and paste the same game every year, these games run on the same game engines and have the same glitches everywhere, year after year.

I haven't bought a sports game in almost 8 years when I used to get them every other year, at the least.

They are completely different games. Horizon bogs you down with boring dialogue and story, while Elden ring is pure gameplay

I still LOVE my old sports games, and not just due to nostalgia reasons. Sports games are still fun as a concept. The problem is EA profitably making bad games. EA is ruining multiple genres right now, but the market isn’t punishing them for it somehow.
