Nintendo constantly getting in their own way.

Nintendo never announced a release date for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The official word has always been “2017”, but since the game’s delay earlier this year, many expected it to be a launch title for the upcoming Switch.
This likely won’t happen, as reliable Nintendo insider Emily Rogers has revealed that due to the game requiring more localisation work than originally anticipated, it will not make the Switch’s launch in March.
Being an open-world game with multiple quests, NPCs, items etc., means localisation efforts will go on for a while, certainly longer than Nintendo originally thought. The end of localisation work is said to be targeting December, according to the report. After which, four to six months will be needed for QA.
These reports have been independently corroborated by Eurogamer, and the site notes that a new Mario game will instead be the console’s banner launch title.
On a more technical note, Roger’s report says that the Switch version of the game runs better than the Wii U version, and the game itself is a bit harder than previous press demos.

I don't think Nintendo is that stupid to hype up a game for 4 different launch dates, only to pull back the promised one from E3. I can almost guarantee this is bullshite.

Well that and the game is done and being held for release. They're not going to make it 7 years between titles let alone 7 years working on a title when everything depends on this launch

Are you implying Nintendo's decision making process hasn't been head-scratching/flawed in the past?

Go ahead and delay it to 2018, we should all expect it

To not have this game as their launch title is unthinkable. Maybe it was just assumption on everyone's part, but if you're trying to win back people, you have to have a heavyweight at launch.

It doesn't mention the Wii U version but I'll just assume it is delayed too

Why are people so mad when Zelda games are typically super polished and awesome?
Give them more time and we'll get yet another fantastic game.

That's not really the point. I agree with you normally, but as it stands right now, there no confirmed big titles to go with the launch, and I'm pretty sure Nintendo absolutely needs that.

We don't know anything about the launch yet, so I think it's too early to panic. They have played this close to the chest. I expect a big Nintendo title or two plus multiple third party games.
I think chances of big releases go up if it gets close to Xbox One power, if it doesn't, then I'd worry.

According to unverified sources, a new Super Mario game will be a launch title for Nintendo Switch to take the place of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
In the Nintendo Switch reveal trailer, one of the first games players see is The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Nintendo has been pushing the game as the premiere title for its new console, leading many to believe that the new Zelda will be available for it at launch. Unfortunately, recent reports indicate that Zelda won’t be ready in time for the Switch’s launch after all, leading many to wonder what Nintendo will deliver at launch to fill the gap. Well, we might already have our answer.
According to Eurogamer, sources have said that a new Super Mario game will be available for Nintendo Switch at release. We know that a new Super Mario title is in development for the console, as it was briefly seen during the Switch’s reveal trailer, but some fans may be surprised to learn that it is apparently far enough along in development to be ready for release this coming March.
Given the anonymity of Eurogamer’s sources, there’s no way to verify these claims at this time. Nintendo has said that there won’t be any more Nintendo Switch news until January 12th, when the Big N is planning to reveal the console’s price and release date. But while fans should definitely take this information with a grain of salt and keep their expectations in check, Eurogamer has a relatively reliable track record when it comes to leaking Nintendo news.

If it isn't, the Switch is finished from the standpoint of third party support

It wouldn't be a Zelda title without a delay only months before release. Still, I'll take a 3D Mario over Zelda any day of the week.
