2 had a different tone than 1. 2 was much more goofy. 1 was good for different reasons.

Never played an actual Borderlands game, but I loved Tales from the Borderlands.

I hope it's worth playing but gearbox can be hit or miss.
There have been a number of games in the interim that use a lot of borderlands gameplay tropes so I'm not sure if the formula is very compelling to me anymore.
Humor on par with 2 (pre sequel was hot garbage) and possible innovation to the tired old shoot and loot formula are things I'm looking for from them this time around.

Borderlands might be the best co-op game in the last decade.
