I'm stoked just to see what a protest with both the right and the left agreeing on something looks like in this country.

Yeah they've turned off every method of account authentication. If you try to delete your account, it gets locked and then the request for deletion gets canceled.

Activision/Blizzard is likely thinking that no matter how much huffing and puffing is done state side, that the Chinese government are still the people they can't afford to piss off. Losing x% of their US customers is preferable to them than losing the entirety of the Chinese market.

They've been painfully quiet on the subject too, probably just hoping it goes away, betting on the public's short attention span.

This is what I meant earlier by the Blizzard leaders not having to make decisions. Sometimes it is better to just wait and see what the market tells you what to do.

Questionable decision as even if this calms down for a while, Blizzcon at the end of the month will simply re-ignite it. If they're betting on Blizzcon going smoothly, I think they are miscalculating on that.

Problem is that catering to 10% of your user base has a potential of costing you a large chunk of the 70% of your core user base who make up the vast majority.

Same problem the NBA is facing right now by trying to cater to China while not upsetting their core fans in the US and Canada.

They probably think they can eject all the troublemakers and control the media surrounding the event.

Doesn’t quite work that way in an age of streaming video.

What will Blizzard do? They can’t exactly come out and disavow the use of their characters in HK protests.

Watch them remove Mei from the game completely.

For those interested, here is what the end of year report looked like for 2018.

So China, Japan, and Korea combined barely crested a billion in revenue while the Americas brought in nearly 3.9 billion and EU 2.6 billion.

The more I think about it the more I feel like this is strictly about the Diablo Immortal release and less about overall long term revenue. Domestic feedback has already all but assured Blizzard it's going to flop here. They are 100% banking on China making Immortal not a complete waste of money and resources.

If they do that, you immediately tell the bank about it and they flag any transaction to Blizzard as fraudulent. Enough of that happens and banks can cut the company off.

If you remove the asshat Asmongold from the mix the WoW numbers for Twitch have really dropped off the last couple of days.

That's mostly because most of the bigger streamers have started to stream other stuff on the side while they wait for the next phase. All the dorks that rushed to the end are sitting and waiting for new content like losers. It'll go right back up next phase and with the addition of PvP next phase I think the floor will be higher. Right now there's not even an honor system.
