Blizzard removes a player from Hearthstone tourney over HK comments

While I know this is political in nature, this crosses over into gaming territory per Blizzard's involvement and the game itself.
Per title, a pro player in Hearthstone made comments regarding the Hong Kong shitshow and Blizzard did not like it at all.

In other words, player makes comments on stream, blizz goes full nuclear and rescinds the player's prize money and bans him for 12 months. On top of that, they FIRE the two commentators who just happened to be working said stream.

Blizzard has ruled that Hearthstone pro Chung "blitzchung" Ng Wai will been removed from Hearthstone Grandmasters, following the player's call for Hong Kong's freedom during a post-match interview. Additionally, Blizzard has stated that it will no longer work with the two casters who appeared in the now deleted broadcast.

As a result, so continues Blizzard's statement, Blitzchung will receive no prizing for Season 2, and will be suspended from Hearthstone esports until October 5, 2020.
quote:
As Andy reported earlier today, Blitzchung did not back down after the sudden removal of the broadcast, during which he wore a gas mask and goggles before shouting "Liberate Hong Kong, revolution of our age!" Following the incident he released a statement elaborating on his stance, writing "I know what my action on stream means. It could cause me lot of trouble, even my personal safety in real life. But I think it's my duty to say something about the issue."

Pretty much.
I know the reaction on reddit is fricking brutal, although we'll see long term how much this bites Blizzard in the arse.

In somewhat more seriousness, I do see this potentially affecting them with significance, simply because this isn't much of a divisive issue. I don't really see much of anyone, left or right, who is taking Blizzard's (China's) side on this one.

I'd be interested to know how many people, NBA and video games fans, actually know what's going on over there and why they are protesting.

I could theorize, but that's it.
I would wager a higher percentage of gamers compared to NBA viewers just because of sheer internet presence, especially on forums and the like.
I do agree that it would be interesting to actually know how many are aware.

Blizzard appears to be arguing that Blitzchung's statements about the Hong Kong protests offended "a portion or group of the public" or damaged the company's image.
Good thing Blizz doesn't make political statements, otherwise.

I'm assuming he's in HK at the moment, so he's still at risk however.

Anyone here read the novel "Change Agent" from the tech thriller author and Houston's own Daniel Suarez?
Every time I read any news about China now, all I think about it that book.

This should come as no surprise. Blizzard has been retroactively censoring their past games and Hearthstone cards to appease Chinese censors.
Absolutely disgusting.
My favorite tweet on the matter thus far:
"Think of how many new gay characters Blizzard is going to have to introduce to smooth this over."
