Blizzard creates a "diversity space tool" to help them create more inclusive characters

The idea of a “tool” to make characters more diverse and inclusive may seem a little hard to wrap your head around. In practice, it has to be more than just, say, a pop-up reminder that between 2017 and 2021 nearly 80% of the highest selling games in the world featured white, male protagonists
quote:
In this effort, the Diversity Space Tool can clearly delineate between token characters and true representation. “[The tool] identifies what stereotypical characters in different genres look like, which are not always the most conducive or representative of diversity,” says Chomatas.
“It helps identify those stereotypes, while also helping creatives look closer at their designs, so they can dissect their own assumptions and presets. It also helps identify opportunities for more diverse character narratives, to ensure that we are not only creating diverse characters in appearance alone.”
quote:
The plan is to release the tool internally across Activision Blizzard starting this summer and into Q3, with an eye towards what Chomatas calls “the ultimate goal”: Making the tool available to the industry as a whole.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say this is because the majority of their customer base is white males
ETA: how about they spend less time on this and more time on bringing back Verdansk

Sicboy can finally ride off into the sunset on his non-binary horse.

People wonder why I tend to play older games and not the newest AAA stuff.
shite like this contributes.
I would rather have a well designed game with a lot of replay value than a loot-box casino or a woke-fest.
Do I give a shite who my XCOM 2 soldier fricks? Nope, as long as they frick up the aliens.

This idea isn't revolutionary, unique or even new. This is a pathetic attempt to appeal to about .5% of the gamer community. The same .5% that requires the most maintenance, and has proven to be unreliable as customers.

Well, that's one way to make sure very few people in reality can relate to the stories and characters in your worlds.

At some point they're going to have to force people to spend money on this crap.
Probably through some sort of taxpayer-funded incentive program that results in junk no one watches, plays, or purchases, but still makes money because the government is forcing us to pay for it.

We have one of those… National Endowment for the Arts, which funded exhibits such as Piss Christ and Mapplethorpe.

I guess that's true. How long before that, PBS, and NPR are moved under the umbrella of our newly minted "Ministry of Truth?"

And that's exactly what American creators should have done. Instead, they apologized themselves into irrelevance.

Instead they've spent the last decade trying to retcon popular characters to be a part of LGBTQ Inc. I guess that's what you do when you're creatively bankrupt and talentless hacks.
