I haven't read all the other comments but here is my opinion. Ports are pretty much there for old school fans and to try and get players who never played the old ones a chance. It's stupid what they charge for ports, when the IP is 10+ years old. For old and new players alike.

Remasters however can offer a plethora of benefits, or letdowns. Remasters generally either try to capture the heart of the original game within the confines of current hardware/technology,or just give an updated graphical version of the original. To me that is appealing, and appalling considering some remasters cost quite a bit of dough for a newly polished version of the same game.

I am personally awaiting an awesome remaster (all the way mind you) of FF6.

Richt has lost control of Capcom's various ports. RE remake and RE4 are both $30 each on Switch and those came out in 02 and 05.

Have you seen SquareEnix's collection of Mana for the Switch? $40 for Final Fantasy Adventure (Gameboy port), the original Secret of Mana, and the original Trials of Mana (officially translated for the first time). I can almost understand this for a physical release, but currently, this collection is digital only.

I think the comment about the movie industry is spot on. Studios don’t have as many fresh ideas and why take a chance on a new IP that could lose you lots of money when you could just remaster a popular game that has a built in fan base that you know is guaranteed to make money. As much as we hate it, game developers are just like other businesses, their first goal is to make money and generate profit, and they’ll do that however they see fit.

I don’t mind and sort of understand “remasters” like the last of Us, GTA 5, and other games that come out at the end of a previous console lifecycle. But I don’t like that so many game from last generation are being remastered. Skyrim, bioshock, some of the assassin creeds, etc. these games aren’t that old. If you are going to do remasters, give us games from more than one generation ago.

Bethesda is one of the worst offenders of this, about the only thing they haven’t remastered Skyrim for is the TI-84 calculator high school kids need for geometry. And I say that with Skyrim probably being one of my top 10 favorite games of all time.

I want to see new IPs and different experiences, this current generation has had way too many remakes and not enough innovation.

Depends on the game and how well it’s done. For example, you would be hard pressed to find complaints about what they did with Shadow of the Colossus. I think there are a ton of classic games like that which could use a fresh coat of paint.
