I grew up playing HoMM 2 & 3. Apparently 3 & 5 are considered the best.
Found it on gog.com for $2. Installed it and the Horn of the Abyss expansion. Still very fun to play. Has a surprisingly engaged online community.

Try finding the OG version of King’s Bounty, preferably the Sega Genesis version, as it was the inspiration for HOMM.
I played the hell out of KB, the GB color version of HOMM, and HOMM V - Tribes Of The East.
The King’s Bounty series also got a revival from Russian developers because it and HOMM are big over there. Have NOT played these versions so I can’t vouch for them.

Yeah it seems like the Russian/Eastern Europe players are keeping it alive. They have come out with new factions and campaigns.
I’ll check out Kings bounty! Thanks for the tip!

3 is the Goat. I'll still fire it up and play occasionally. 5 is good too

I played the second one a ton as a kid, remembered completing the campaign too.
Tried it as an adult and I sure as heck don't remember it being as tough as it is.

There was some M&M-ish game I played waaaaaay back when, all I remember was it being a first-person game and being able to fly over an area where dragons roamed (and dodging their breath weapons, they were landbound).

It could have been a Might and Magic game you're thinking of; they've had so many. 10 core games and about a half dozen spin-offs, not including the strategy series.
Heroes of Might and Magic were strategy games though, very different from the RPG series.

One of my first PS2 games was Quest for the Dragon Bone Staff. I was terrible at it, but I thought it was a lot of fun.
