I could give you the IP address but you still couldn't touch it. Trust me son, they got this stuff ON LOCK.
We all very individualized jobs. There's a whole other crew that deals with nothing but locking down our servers and monitoring them 24/7. I get alarms constantly for stuff as small as a memory spike...just got another one actually.

Yep, Windows and Linux are different.
I'm not real familiar with Linux. I tood one red hat class in college about 7 years ago and haven't touched it since. A lot of CLI stuff but that's why people like it. You can do whatever the eff you wanna do with it.

Nope. Old school. Physical boxes, one at a time. I'm just setting up the base image on each and then I'll install all the rest of the software and apps once I set up my new racks and connect it to the kvm
I did get a blade enclosure though but they've been sending me a ton of stuff and haven't told me what they need me to do with it yet. I love when that happens. Can barely walk through my data center right now.

....i know very few datacenters that are spotless when upgrades are going down. virtual is the way to go. i can load an 08 server with apps and upgrades in about 45 minutes compared to 1.5 - 2 hours per physical server.

You're telling me.
I do maintenance once a month and I have to be onsite to do it b/c I have to pop a mirrored drive in case of any issues and they don't want me to pop it without shutting it down (even tho it's hot swappable) b/c they want a "clean" installation. Makes sense, but still a pain.
When I took a class with my buddy on setting up the blade servers (which he was getting, I was not) he was showing us how easy it was to install EVERYTHING. He showed us how to create a virtual non-production machine based off the production image, patch it, make sure it works, then copy it back over to the production image.
I said "so you're telling me I can have two of the same image in case one fails? "
"yep"
I look at my buddy "which means you can patch all day and blow up the machine and be all good b/c you have copies of the entire machine"
"yep"
"That's some BS...I want one"
Sometimes if I'm busy I'll just go to town and say screw it, if something doesn't work I'll just remove the patches I just installed and call it a day.

....i've pretty much weasled my way to where i only load virtual servers. trying to load a server in Nigeria on a satellite connection. frick that. could take days.
i frick up a virtual load, ohh well, i'll have a fresh load on it in 20 minutes tops.
