this game has been out 20 years. (Japan release date)
Revolutionized console gaming as we know it.
I never came close to all 120 Stars
realizing this game is 20 years old makes me feel old as frick.

Amazing game. One of the best of all-time. Some of the best video game music as well.

Never got to play it. My mom got it off eBay for me and it was doom 64 with a Mario sticker over it. That was a big disappointment.

still the best Mario game IMO. the level design, concept, MUSIC (would've been really easy to use the old stuff which is so familiar and famous)
only thing I was ever truly disappointed in, as a 12 year old kid, was yoshi was just a cameo
Mario galaxy 2 resolved that for me so many years later

Best Mario of all time.
Game hit me at the perfect age. (10)
Man I miss the 64.

I move around on this one, but there's no doubt it's my favorite and the most important one. I sometimes think super Mario world is the best, other times I think galaxy is the best

Quake just became 20 years old too

Man, I know this is a great song, but I played this game during a really crap time in my life, so hearing this just depresses me

My favorite 64 song and in my top 10 for game tracks.
Nostalgia plays a big part.

it's sooo perfect and it's definitely intended to be melancholy, I don't think you're alone on that one. I get a sense of loneliness listening to it
that level is so empty, but yet there's this enormous submarine.
if I had to choose a piece of music that so perfectly encapsulates the magic of Nintendo for me, that's the one.

For whatever reason, I never got into this game as much as Super Mario World. Loved Mario Party on the 64 though.

This. But SM64 is one of the most important video games of all time.
Just a wonderful game.

Quake 1 and 2 were the reasons I never played any zeldas as a youth.
Spent all my gaming time playing Quake online MP. It was also revolutionary

Graphics still hold up.
I don't think I would have bought this game hadn't it come with my 64, and that'd be a big big shame!!!

I never owned an N64. When it launched I didn't have enough money to buy one myself and my parents had just bought me a new PC so I had fully switched to PC gaming. But man, I wanted Mario 64 so bad.
I remmeber the Sears at Cortana mall in BR had an N64 demo system with Mario 64 on it and I would spend all the time I could on it while my parents shopped. I've since played it emulated, of course. I still enjoy Super Mario World more but Mario 64 is one of the most influential / important games of all time.

I think it slowed the platforming skill aspect of gaming and increased the adventure aspect in a 3D space.

Most everyone got the N64 and SM64 that Christmas, there was one kid a few houses down from me who got it the day it came out. We decided to go over and check it out and there was a line of people out the door.
Still to this day probably the most mindblowing experience in gaming I've had.
They took the greatest, most perfect 2D platform series and fully transitioned to the greatest, most perfect 3D platform game in one attempt. Just having Mario and the familiar settings in a wide open, fully controllable 360 degree space was just unreal.
The game represents a giant leap in gaming.
In a way it may have hurt the rest of the N64's library. Nintendo made the transition perfectly and instantly and then had a policy that essentially required all N64 games to be 3-D. The technology was still new and no one could really match the bar they set so high right off the bat.
It made strategy guides a big thing you had to have. With 120 stars, it brought completionism as we now know it into the fray. It had the infamous glitches and urban legends like finding Luigi or the 121st star. Today it has one of biggest and most competitive speedrun scenes.
Based solely on influence and the paradigm shift it caused, the game has to be considered one of the GOAT's.
It's still fun as hell too
