Whole Foods version is the Chantilly cake.

Rouses is better!

Agree.

This is also because the creator of the cake is from here. She brought it to WF, but left and is now bakery director for all of the Rouses.

I dunno if she's the bakery director of all of the Rouses, but she (Chaya Conrad) is the owner of Bywater Bakery. NOLA.com story here:

Haven't been to the new bakery, so I can't give an honest assessment, but I would think things would be pretty much the same. After all, it is only baking confections, and it's not like they moved up north where temperature, humidity levels, etc. can have an effect on such things.

They're just as good as ever. We get their mixed box for pretty much every occasion. I'm picking up my daughter's b-day cake in two weeks. It's the same cake with a much better parking situation.

Beth Biundo Sweets over near the Martin's Wine Cellar uptown. My favorite cake option in town. Especially if you're looking for semi-sweet choice.

Thanks--that's exactly what I'm seeking. Sticky, sickly sweet a la Gambino's is not popular with this crowd.

That's me. Can't stand over the top sweet dessert. Her cream cheese butter cream icing is amazing, and I love all of her different lemon cakes.

Adding another “not too sweet” option to the list: Chez Pierre, with multiple locations around town. Just had a slice of chocolate chantilly cake, it was light and delicious, not sticky sweet. Also good are the chocolate ganache cake and the mousse cake.

My friend makes some good fun cakes at a fair price if you’ve already tried the main places:

This is the best doberge cake I've eaten. It's freshly made (custom order is the best with many available flavors and options) and is not overly sweet.

It makes the best birthday cake.

My wife knows the owners and part of the problem, besides wanting to sell the building was the issue with parking.

Their little internal parking area was a PITA to negotiate. Now at American Can, they have easy off-street and street parking right on Orleans Ave. Plus it's much easier to even get to the business now as opposed to heading to the CBD.

John Georges made them an offer they couldnt refuse, but the family wanted to stay on St Charles. The brother was sole owner of the building, I believe, and wanted to sell and obviously did

I will second Creative Cakes in Harvey. Angelo's in Metairie made that really interesting chantilly king cake during the Carnival season. I would think they could do a custom order birthday cake, as well.

Off the beaten path, Happy Italian Pizzeria in Harahan, has great home-baked cakes, as well. Chef Lenny's daughter is an award-winning pastry chef. We will gladly spend serious money for her carrot cake this upcoming Easter Sunday. Worth a call or e-mail at least to see if they will put together a custom order or sell you one of their cakes.
