I've been experimenting with the Tempranillo's a lot lately. Spanish black grape.

This is a superb old-vine garnacha for $10 bucks and is pretty readily available in Louisiana.

There is a new Grenache you can find in most wine stores now that is a great everyday.
2013 Bodegas Ateca "Honoro Vera". It retails between $8-10. Extremely complex for the price point. Goes really well with spicy food, BBQ, I-Talian.

All night people were asking what brand it was and how good it was. It was very good and $3. I've also had $50 bottles that were shite. 95% of the population can't tell the difference.
On that same note, a big portion of mass produced wine at low price points is total garbage, but the wine industry knows the general masses will still drink it because they don't know any better. Your point swings both ways.

Wife and i have been to napa and Sonoma and probably 40-50 wineries in our life
Don't get me wrong I've had some amazing expensive wines but more times than not when we sample wine at the wineries our favorite is far from the most expensive. That's before we know the price so we aren't swayed
Also my BIL has worked as a director for Gallo for 12 years. He's told me many of times their studies show that 95% can't tell the difference and that's why their best selling wines are barefoot and apothic, both under $10 wines.
I've also tricked him before and done blind taste tests and he's missed and Gallo has spent lots of $$ on him training his pallet in many countries. Lol

I bought some $2.99 trader joes wine last weekend and put it in a decanter
Try the Whole Foods brand Three Wishes (Also in the $3 range) if you get a chance, I find their Cabernet to be even better than Trader Joe's.

Thanks I will
I just discovered trader joes and spent $100 on Monday. Lol
I've got a whole foods, central market and trader joes all within 10 minutes of me

Thereby damning it with faint praise.

Any Spanish wine with the Jorge Jordonez or Juan Gil import stamp is worth your time. So many affordable great wines in that selection of portfolios.

Campo Viejo´s Reserva and Gran Reserva are available at very reasonable prices here (Rioja)
Marqués del Riscal (Rioja)
Protos (Ribera del Duero)
Mauro (just outside of Ribera del Duero, I believe it´s simple called Castilla, and better than many heralded Dueros)
You can also find some Priorat or Prioratos here, which are potent.
There is a TON of Garnacha in the US (Spain typically consumes Tempranillo or Tinto del Pais). You may want to look at Montsant región, apart from the classics (like Cariñena).

Not to mention, what they were really fighting about was whether a 15 dollar bottle of eine was better than a 40 dollar bottle wine
truth ... i drink wine just about every day, but i rarely drink it outside the house ... can't stand spending $10 for a glass of wine that comes from a $15 bottle ...

Mazzoco - probably my favorite Zins on the planet $$$

No offense to you, but the Cloudline Pinot is probably the worst wine that I tasted in 2014. Water with a little red food coloring. You can read the newspaper through it.

I love wine but I also believe wine is a lot of hype with price
Right on Dallas! I spent mucho $ in the past on wine courses and expensive wines, only to learn through blind tasting that I prefer some of the less expensive wines.
To me different wines just taste different and terms like: good/bad; better/worse; don't apply.
When I eat at commanders now I don't look through the 400 page wine menu, I just order a bottle of the house wine which I find is more than adequate.

At Oak...ordered a bottle of Sexual Chocolate (a Napa Syrah/Zin blend)...very balanced and paired well with some lamb dishes .

I am going to try to find that sexual chocolate blend at a retail store now. I know I have seen it somewhere. It was really nice
