Why did Magpie Cafe Downtown start closing early?

I thought their pizza with the house made mozzarella was the best in town. Sad to see they've shut down dinner service.
Also, no more breakfast boards.
Damn shame.

Magpie downtown went from a once or twice a week thing for me to my not having been there in months. Part of it was the changes themselves, but mostly it was my frustration that it seemed as though every time I showed up, they had changed something else without notice and without explanation.
I genuinely hope their changes have made financial sense for them, as I'd hate to see them close, but if so I honestly can't fathom how.

I like the place, but I imagine dinner/cocktails weren't attracting enough business to justify it. I went for dinner once and was disappointed at pretty much only having the option of a pizza, an arugula salad, or some cheese.
I also agree on changing things. I used to follow the weekly menu since I work downtown, but I went there several times to pick something up and they weren't serving it.
EDIT: Wait, I just checked out their FB and they haven't posted in a month. Are they no longer serving lunch sandwiches and salads? I see a permanent menu on their website and it is just a different quiche and a different scone each day.

I always want to go on weekends but when I look them up, the downtown location is closed.
The overpass location is great, but I gotta say, it hard to order food over there. menu is hard to read.

I went there for their Saturday brunch a few months ago. I thought the food was great. However, the coffee situation was pretty disappointing. There was no variety and when I tried to order a pour-over, the waitress told me they out of pour-overs, whatever that means. Overall, it was pretty enjoyable, and they did a good job with the place.

I find that they are out of whatever it is you are wanting to order (food or drink) about 2/3 of the time. In both the downtown and Perkins locations. Baffling.

I didn't realize people went to Magpie and ordered anything other than a water to sit in there and use their wifi all day.

I suppose they could theoretically be out of filters or coffee beans, but I find either to be astronomically unlikely

Certainly a sad situation.
The atmosphere of the place is a breath of fresh air for downtown.
I can understand if the dinner/cocktail experiment wasn't making financial sense...
...but not having breakfast boards or any breakfast other than pastry is a bit baffling.

But it's a bit of a snowball issue. I would routinely find myself at the office late in the afternoon/early in the evening and decide that I wanted to get out. So I'd go to Magpie, get a cortado, work a bit longer, then get a pint, decompress with colleagues, then order dinner and wine/cocktails. By the end of the evening, I will have spent a fair amount of money, at least by coffee shop standards.
Now? I haven't been to Magpie, even for coffee, in I don't recall exactly how long. It's just not something that really crosses my mind anymore because I fell out of the habit.
