The pizza talk about Tower of Pizza got me to thinking. Tower of Pizza sells a classic WOP salad, but I just checked and they don't call it that on the menu.

I only know of 2 places that still have WOP salad on the menu: Rocky and Carlo's in Chalmette and Tessie's Place in Metairie. Tessie's is just lettuce and tomato salad with olive mix on top.

R & C's

Tessie's

Who else still lists WOP salad on their menu?

The rocky's thread said they changed it to "Italian salad".

Maybe they have now, but I found a picture of their menu that had it.

Naturally, I can't find it now.

That's what I always heard, but I was just on a site that said it came from an Italian word "guappo" which was an overly confident young Italian man.

quote:

According to conventional wisdom, "wop" is an American English pejorative ethnic slur for an Italian. It is derived from the Neapolitan word "guappo" (often pronounced simply as "guap'" in the regional dialect), meaning a person who flaunts an overbearingly cocky and swaggering attitude. In Italy, the term "guappo" is still used, often sarcastically, to describe those young native men who try too hard to act brave, play cool, impress the girls, act arrogant and pick fights among other "guappos." In the U.S., we would simply call them punks.

My family is friends with many of their family members and it is without papers for that dish. Not guap. I know my dad went a few weeks ago and got the wop salad. Not sure if it is on the menu but when he ordered it that way they knew what he wanted.

I hope someone doesn't see this, complains, and gets it removed.

What's wrong with having it renamed to Italian Salad? It will still taste the same.

Used to. I looked it up when I saw this thread. It is now called "Italian Tossed Salad".

It's a part of quirky local nostalgia for a lot of people.

Almost no locals of Italian decent had an issue with it. Pretty much every one of these were on menus of places owned and operated by those of Italian/Sicilian decent.

It started to become an "issue" when out-of-towners would come to these places and express SHOCK at seeing what they thought of as an ethnic slur on a menu. So, they all just quietly got changed to avoid further brewhaha.

Nothing huge. Just another small chipping away of something uniquely local, though.

This. In the Rocky and Carlo's thread I mentioned my connection with them. Do you want me to come into your house and rename your bed a giraffe recliner?
