I agree...while ER17 is very good My top 3 of btac are probably the high proofers. Yes including handy...I like making sazeracs with it. ER and saz18 are delish...but if I had to pick it would be in that order.

I've tried a few scotches over the years, but just now starting to appreciate it. I drank rotgut in college, which turned me off for a very long time.

I've tried many of the blends, JW, Dewars and that ilk.

I've had Laphroaig, and I'm not ready for that genre yet.

Only recently had Glenlivet and loved it. What would be some others to give a try?

p.s.-I can't go back and read 25,000 posts. I will start following from here on out though.

Edit: Response from Motorboat to my mistake thread:

"Balvenie: I really like the Caribbean cask 14 years but just about any Balvenie will do.
Dalwhinnie: a lighter scotch worth trying
McAllen: I like both the 12 and the 14"

My goto answer is Glenfiddich 15. Do not get Glenfiddich 12.

Also acceptable:
Anything from the highlands.
Anything from speyside.

Be careful with anything for "The Isle of Islay" which is where Laphroaig is from. It is an entirely different animal.

Other than that, try lots of stuff and decide what you like.

I mean... There are people on this board that actually like bourbon... I know... Hard to believe..

At $45+ per bottle, I'm trying to weed some out in advance.

I like it myself. And gin. And beer and wine.

One bourbon, one scotch and one beer....and a gin and a wine.

And some people are blind to how incredible America's Native Spirit is.

A couple of other things to think about.

IMHO, scotch has more variation from company to company than any other spirit.

Also the difference between poor scotch and mid level scotch is HUGE!!! Cheap scotch is terrible. Mid Level scotch (14 yo through 18 yo) is significantly better. However there is minimal difference between mid level scotch and high end scotch (>18 yo) unless you are really into it which very few people are. But the price goes way up. So try as many 14yo to 18yo as you can.

Oh... How I wish scotch was just $45/bottle. I would have many more dollars...

FYI dorignacs got some good stuff on the shelf. Elmer t Lee for $80, Michters toasted for $125, EC18 for $150, JB master keep $175, AE Rye $125. Some other ridiculous priced items as well.

Three years ago, I'd go there all the time...don't even walk in anymore.

Actually thought their EC18 would be $200, $150 isn't awful

That's what I paid for my Glenlivet

If that is cheap, I will stay uncouth.

150 for EC18 isn't bad at all, but they are never gonna sell that Toasted Barrel for $125
