Oban 14

Scotch is just more complex and interesting. I love it all...just the way I have seen it for years.

I think that's why I prefer bourbon and ryes. They're rougher around the edges, there can be a lot there, but you have to kinda peel at the layers. Nothing against Scotch, but it's almost too smooth quite often. The flavors are too muted or subtle for me. I'd rather something hitting me in the face with flavor, even if it's overpowering. Plus Bourbon is 'Merican and that wins every time for me on principle alone.

Give me the tough to handle sports car any day over the easy driving luxury sedan.

Barrel Select
Sweet Wheat
Barrel Select Q Bins
Barrel Select Calandros
Small Batch

Thoughts:
Barrel Select Q Bins (7.5): Flavor was aggressive with solid complexity. Finish was a little harsh for me.
Barrel Select Calandros (7.5): Pretty sure it is the same stuff as the Q Bins. If not, I couldn't tell the difference.
Barrel Select (7): Could very well be the same as the other Barrel Selects. Maybe a touch lighter on the flavor and the finish.
Small Batch (5): Reasonable flavor. Much smoother than the Barrel Selects but the smoothness seems to mask a lesser flavor.
Sweet Wheat (0.5): Not very good at all. No reasonable flavor to speak of. No finish. Nothing. It was like drinking water.

Review (Scores out of 10):
Talisker 18 yo (8.5): Yeah... I know what you are saying... But SMS you are a Glenfiddich guy. I am.. But the Talisker is better. The best combination of the oakiness of the Glenfiddich and the peatness of the Laphroaig. Delicious, complex, flavorful, smooth. Really nice.

Glenfiddich 18 yo (8.0): What can I say. It's delicious. The older Glen's get a bit sweet for me. Sweetness of almost an apple juice.

Jonnie Walker Platinum (6.0): Solid but uninspiring. Kinda like the Honda Accord of 18yo scotches. Solid flavor, solid complexity, just solid.

Highland Park (5.99): It was really close between the Highland Park and the JW. The Highland Park lost out on the finish. An small unpleasant woodiness a bit like eating bark. Not too bad but not great.

Laphroaig (3.5): What can I say. I am trying. I really am... But the Islay scotches might just not be for me. It is so peaty and so different. I will continue my effort to like them but I am not there yet.

Glenmorangie (1.5): Very strong woody finish. Overpowers the entire scotch. Unpleasant. Really doesn't compete with the others.

I'm more disappointed in the odd balls trading ETL for Sweet Wheat.

I'm a wheater so may be partial, but it's a mild bourbon I like every once in a while to break up the ECBP/high proofers. The Wellers, especially the 12/107 mix is admittedly deeper and more flavorful.

It isn't worth more than $35, and had I paid $50 I'd be a little more bothered by it.

Also, not having to search too hard to find it was a plus.
