I've loved bourbon all my life, but when did the new age of bourbon in the South begin? I'm talking about graduating from Evan Williams black being the baseline to Maker's Mark.

Good question. But it seems like a legit thing.

Evan Williams black? shite, I’m still an Evan Williams green connoisseur. Nothing like $16 for a handle of bourbon.

Probably about 6 years ago was when I went from being able to buy Eagle Rare anywhere to having to seek it out in rural stores or out of state.

You really have trouble finding eagle rare? My local kroger always has it.

Alabama has a state liquor monopoly so our Buffalo Trace allocations are not only terrible but are unevenly dispersed throughout the state. Since I live in Birmingham along with a huge chunk of the bourbon hipsters, there is zero chance of finding any around here. But when I’m out of town I can usually find some.

Yep...at least that’s when the high end bourbons surged in demand

That is probably right. I was in New Orleans for the National Championship game in Jan of 2012 and went into a liquor store on Bourbon St and there was a bottle of Pappy Van Winkle 15 yr and 20 yr sitting on the shelf for $74 and $124. I think there was a NFL playoff game going on in town about this time also so there was a ton of people in town. Pretty crazy those bottles were still sitting there.

I remember that Wright Thompson wrote an article about Pappy for Grantland around 2011/2012. Seemed like the price jumped up even more and the availability got even tighter.

Don't ever blaspheme Evan Williams black label.
