We eat at night. Same with Christmas other than breakfast Christmas morning.

We go to a party every Thanksgiving morning from about 10:30-1:30. Then, we scatter and meet again about 5:30 and carry on into the night.

Growing up, we always had supper. I still call it that from time to time. I like that term. Reminds me of my grandmothers.

the early eating time will be even more convenient this year since, we'll have to haul our stuff to the tailgate spot that night.

To be honest I'd rather have a Thanksgiving breakfast and get it over with.

when we do it mid- to late- afternoon, it feels like i'm working all day. i'd rather get up early, get all the cooking done for lunch, and then hit the couch for football the rest of the day.

I am in the same boat here. Wife is out of town until late Thursday night and I am headed to the camp around noon Wednesday and won't return until early Friday morning. We are headed to the game at that time and my weekend is shot afterwards.

My family and the husband's family both eat around 1pm so we are early to one and late to the other. Same thing on Christmas. And neither family will change their time.

Have you ever alternated years with each family?

Another reason we do it at night is because a few of my family have to be at other places early afternoon. Works out well for everyone and my sister's in-law's entire family has always celebrated with us both Thanksgiving and Christmas, so that eliminated one conflict. Another sister-in-law's family does their Thanksgiving and Christmas either before or just after the actual days as they have a large family like ours, but they're more scattered. That helps, too.

Agreed, it's a term that's sadly dying.

Back in the day we arrived at Taunt's house around noon after church. It was actually two taunts...unmarried sisters living together. Both were mostly deaf, along with my dad and Uncle Carroll so the conversation was very loud. Carroll's old wife was even louder.

Cocktails were served at 1 pm. The drinks were an Old Fashion, bourbon and sugar type drink; and High Ball, bourbon and water with a cherry. I was confined to a small glass of Spanish Sherry since I was only 7.

Food was served at 2 pm. Turkey was cooked dark, almost burnt. Rice with gravy. Salad, Hot Rolls with butter, Green Beans, Pecan Pie for desert...I really hated the pie.

Conversation was boring. Women talked. Men just ate. Then, men retired to the living room to watch football on TV. Taunts had the only TV in our extended family. A big box with a small black and white screen. Lots of black space in each corner of the screen. Women remained at the dinner table to gossip.

At 3 pm the women, about 6 of them, went back to the bedrooms to take a nap. The men took a nap on the couches and chairs.

At 5 everyone went home. No one had dinner. We were stuffed.

Those were the days.

We don't do this because my husband's family has some really sick members that we want to see at every possible opportunity. We don't miss my families' get together because my mom is selfish and throws a fit. (really my family is really close and are great cooks)

You have to do what you have to do. Even though it doesn't work out exactly as you might like, it's nice to have a few places to go.

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. No gifts involved...just family, friends, food, f-drink and football.

We have a big meal on Wed night when the out of towners drift in, so it's somewhat of a marathon for 24 hours. I love when my family is altogether. Got some darn dry witted funny people in the mix. It's a hoot.

My family usually eats for Thanksgiving and Christmas around 2. I may go to my boyfriend's aunt's house later that day since they don't eat until 6 (they eat late like that for Christmas too).

It would be Taunc Carroll. He was the educated man in the family. He got a degree in agronomy from LSU and cut down rain forests in Brazil back in the 60s.
Nice guy but deaf as a jay bird.
