Before the owner retired, my go to was Horinoya. He would almost always have Mirugai, Toro, killer Uni and Amaebi. Now I have to find a new place where Japanese is spoken and the food is true to the cuisine, etc. Everyone seems to have their favorite sushi place, but I'm looking for the real deal. Thanks.

I thought Horinoya was bit overrated, but you are going to be disappointed with what is out there. Kanno may be the best, but we are way behind other metro areas for high end traditional sushi. Shogun is another opton, but to me has been really disappointing since Kaz left.

Sadly, with them moving out, such a thing doesn't really exist here anymore.

Have you been to Daiwa on the westbank?

It's not "authentic Japanese" and doesn't even pretend to be (it bills itself as "Hong Kong style sushi"). But they are doing some rather interesting things there and it's definitely a step beyond most everything else in the area these days.

Mikimoto

I usually order pickup or delivery from Mikimoto. However, last time I ate here there were several tables of Japanese (I presume) men eating in business attire. That's the only way I know how to gauge if any Asian establishment is authentic or not.

Look who suggested it. Mikimoto is about as American sushi as you can get

I've never been to Japan but I'd say there is about a 0% chance that place is authentic

It's just a run of the mill sushi joint

It was authentic enough for those guys. What are you going to find that's 100% authentic Japanese outside of NYC or West Coast?

Seems like you're being presumptuous

1. You don't know if they're Japanese
2. You don't know if they really care about authenticity

That's such a weak argument.

Nothing distinguishes Mikimoto from just regular old American sushi. Fwiw, I like the place but I'm not gonna pretend a couple of Japanese guys eating there means it's legit like I'm in Japan

It's one of those places that's rated higher than it should be because it just so happens to be in New Orleans

Put it in a shopping center on veterans and no one gives a frick about the place
