Maybe Coke realized that they were besmirching their proud brand by offering those abominations in the first place?

As already stated, there is a can shortage. It's not an aluminum shortage.
The major players - Ball, Crown, Ardagh - have consolidated plants after purchasing smaller producers over the past ~10 years and all of a sudden, a can boom hit with seltzers, craft beers, companies moving from PET bottles to cans, etc. and they literally can not make enough cans right now to keep up with demand. Will likely last through the end of 2021 until Ball, Crown etc can put more production lines in to meet demand.
