What are some must-haves while in Austin, as well as on the way there from BR? FWIW, I'm not interested in standing in line multiple hours for BBQ, and I'm not looking for anything too pricy, either. TIA

You might be waiting a long time now because it's been closed for months. Not because it wasn't good, but because their owner always seems to find a way to mess a good thing up.

If you're looking for Mexican, El Gallo is good and not expensive.

Damn, hate to hear that. I usually get to Austin each summer for meetings, and usually eat there. That was my favorite place there to eat at.

BBQ: Rudy's, Salt Lick, Valentina's, Terry Black's, Lambert's, Stubb's

I would never wait in a multi-hour line for Franklin's.

If you're not feeling BBQ, Gus's Fried Chicken is the bee's knees.

Good luck

Texas Chili Parlor is a pretty cool spot. It's a dive bar with character that makes damn good venison chili.

Stop at any and all Buc-ee's along your way...which would be Baytown and either Luling or Bastrop depending on if you go 71 or 183.

If you take I10 to HWY183 you'll be traveling through Lockhart, which is the spiritual home of Texas BBQ. Kreuz and Smitty's are the places to stop.

The BBQ you'll find in Austin at say Franklin and La BBQ is far superior, but I'll still stop at Kreuz for a link and a Big Red anytime I'm passing through.

We like enchiladas y mas for Tex mex. Gus's is a must for us also along with Juan in a Million Don Juan breakfast tacos. Last time we tried Vespiao on S. Congress for Italian. We thought it was fantastic.

Hah. I never see this place mentioned. I'd never tell a visitor to go there, but I love this place. Family run Tex mex dive with awesome enchiladas and strong margaritas. The food will not blow you away...but I tell locals to go there because it's a staple. I'd hit up more interesting places for Tex Mex or straight Mex,
Like Curras or Polvos.

There are a ton of threads on this, and I suggest the OP search and find a recent one.

I do find it interesting that someone brought up Texas Chili Parlor. Nobody ever mentions it in these threads, but it's a downtown staple that has been there for a long time. You might find it busy with legislative session going on if you go for lunch. But they have awesome chili that will wreck you. Also their chili enchiladas are awesome.

Not if you go to Taylor. That brisket is the shite. I only go because I work in the area a few times a year, though.

Indeed. Order a shot of chartreuse if you go. It's a taste you'll never forget. Not exactly good, but interesting and not nearly as bad as say OG absinthe.
