Tell me about this German stew

It’s a standard beef stew with root vegetables and I add mushrooms. The secret is cloves.
There are no tomatoes. This is a brown beef stew.

There are a few versions in the official Germanfest Cookbook from Robert’s Cove, La.

I get Jalapeno Grillades (sliced pork shoulder) from a local butcher, brown them a little, take them out, add some bell pepper and onions, deglaze the pot, add the meat back and make a little gravy. It taste very similar to Chinese Peppe Steak. Had that with some smoother potatoes and green beans.

Interesting. Thanks I’ll check that out. My MIL is German but limited in her home country culinary efforts. Rouladen is the only German dish she cooks with any regularity but it’s so good.
