Can you just bbq or only smoke? New the game. Have a pit and a smoker but want a combo. Looking at the pro series 22

I believe the Traeger controller allows a max temp of 450DegF. That won't be high enough to sear anything. At least I don't think so... but there a lot of pellet grillers on this board that know more. I'm new to the pellet arena too.

It won’t get as hot as an egg will, but the one steak I’ve had off of a Traeger was good and the sear was a little less than I typically do, but it was still fine.

You won't be able to sear but you can smoke-cook anything and not hafta babysit a fire. Unless you like that. I've had one for 15 years and the only thing i don't do on it is steaks and burgers.

You can with a pellet grill. Searing grate temp was close to 700

You may wanna look into RecTec pellet grills as well to compare.
Quite a few threads on pellet grills on here. The threads and most videos I watch say RecTec is a superior product to Traeger. Better built quality, holds temp better with 5 degree increments, offers higher temps, etc.
Just an fyi.

I don't think that works with the Traeger controller. I know mine goes to goes to 600DegF with the open sear grate but I don't think the controller on the Traeger gets there. That was one of the initial things that disqualified Traeger for me.

You can get a searing grate that can get hotter than the 450.
However, I would say if money is not an issue get a pellet grill that can get into the 600-700, and go bigger. There are some better than Traeger but more costly and worth it. Do research and get the one right for what you want to accomplish.

Well...they aren’t even really smokers.

I can do anything a regular grill can do except sear....

I can sear on my GMG but haven't done it yet. I've accidentally had it too high and came out to sizzling bbq meats
I also have a pizza attachment for it that gets the stone up to 900 degrees that i can sear on. The only heat source is the combustion of the wood.
I don't own traeger but heard the grill specs changed when they shifted production to China. May be worth comparing with other smokers.
