I really don't get the hype over TJ's. Two-buck Chuck is absolutely awful and tastes like Manishewitz to me. The store's loaded with cheap products but is marketed as being some high-end establishment, maybe a poor man's Whole Foods. As for people who care about organic and what not, I've noticed that a lot of their groceries are loaded with all kinds of wonderful chemicals.

But I wanted to go see what the hype was about and wanted to check with the FDB just to make sure I didn't overlook something.
I think you have it pretty much nailed. They are cheaper for some things, but for the most part, you pay extra for organic stuff.
I rarely go there. They had an OK beer selection, but not when compared to the mavenly places in Portland.

anything frozen or pre-made has to have chemicals in it

Not necessarily true for frozen. You can flash freeze just about anything these days without putting chemicals on the food. However, making that food still taste good when it's reheated is where the chemicals are generally necessary.

Haven't been yet, but it sounds like a cult

Don't know about the other stuff, but they have some great red and yellow curry. Comes in a jar, just add meat and snow peas and it is on.

I'm a fan, they have very high quality products at a low price.
- Unsalted Butter $2.50/lb (no added "natural flavor" like Land O Lakes)
- Frozen Haricot Vert $1.99 2lbs (product of France)
- B Grade Maple Syrup $13.99 25oz
- Uncured Applewood Bacon Ends and Pieces $2.50/lb
My wife swears by the non-dairy icecream. That's just a handful of the things I've found there that made me a big fan.

I've been by a couple of times. I bought a bottle of their $2.29 double IPA and it was not good at all. And the Missus is not a fan of $2 Buck Chuck. But I got some good cheese and crackers from there and the produce was nice.

Hello metrosexual TJ enthusiast. (Not that there is anything with people of your sexuality).

Last reply...I promise.
I just want to know what I said that pissed you off so bad?

I can completely see finding a couple of things in the place that make a trip worth while. I just found it very hard to do while walking through the store and selecting from stuff that is all branded TJ.
I was simply looking for some pointers in good stuff so I may be able to make some good selections next time I give it a try.
But apparently some of the other posters in this thread get all bent out of shape about any questions in TJ that are not geared towards praise towards the store.

It was exponentially better than the Boatswain single IPA.
I haven't tried the Mission St. beers, and I think they have another brand as well.
The Boatswain ones though, avoid.

you make asinine assumptions and statements like this:
quote:
Had some good looking gals up in there! All if the dudes looked like hipster type nerds. If a fight ever broke out in trader joes I could probably shite stomp the entire stores capacity at the same time.
which make you try to look like a cool guy when in fact you just look like some dip shite spouting off at the mouth.
For the record i'm not the biggest fan of the store, but I can see why some like it. But to generalize people is idiotic.

I thought it was good for a $2.29 double IPA.
I actually liked the Boatswain H.L.V.

I've posted a few times with small lists of good buys. I've been fortunate to go through 7 or 8 of their stores while traveling. My wife would always stop if we were in a city that had one. The benefit is being able to browse leisurely without it being overrun with assclowns. (with the exception of San Diego...both that I have been to there were completely overrun with assclowns) Anyone not familiar with the place, I'd recommend waiting a while until the new car smell dissipates. They have done a marvelous job of culling their product lineup for quality. I have not been let down by anything from there yet. Their coffee was pretty damn good years past. I'm a super nerd and roast my own so it is lost on me now.
I scored a nice sized bag of cortland apples the other day for under $1 a lb. You have to be able to dodge hipsters and ignore douches in your way to find stuff though.

Didn't try that one.
I picked up the Chocolate Stout, IPA, and Double IPA. The Chocolate Stout was okay, the Double IPA was mediocre I thought, and the IPA was really bad.
I'd buy the chocolate stout again, but not the others. One day I'll give the rest and the other brands a try.

I'm a hefeweizen fan personally, so most of the IPAs are just not my thing. That said, the TJ's line of Dunkelweizen is pretty damn good for under $7 a 6pack.

i actually heard a guy in the one here asking if they carried Firestone Walker. I wish
