but then couldn't places like Honolulu or Juneau make strong claims?
Does Juneau have a real fine dining scene? Furthermore, I'm unaware of any truly celebrated unique food culture from either one of those places.

I would think the battle for 5th would be between Miami, Philadelhia, Dallas, Atlanta, Orlando
I don't see how anyone could put Atlanta in their top 5.
I won't say top 5, but I think that Tampa is an underrated place for good cooking.

Dallas feels like a cookie-cutter megacity to me.
Shows how little you know about Dallas. We have a lot of great high end places. But also many, many mom and pop type places. Of course you have to venture into the city neighborhoods to find them. I could eat at a different small restaurant every day of the week if I wanted to. I don't know if Dallas is top 5 but its up there.

It's stuffy on chowhound though...too many food snobs IMO....though I do still read/post sometimes.

That's great, but what's the unique food culture of Dallas?

I lived in Atlanta for 10 years. I loved the choices of places to eat there. You have a lot of fine dining options, some great hole in the wall places, ethnic parts of town with good food. Historic places like The Varsity and Sliver Skillet. Good BBQ joints. I definitely think its worth mentioning

I actually point people there when they ask for my opinion. I like food too much to be a critic, so helping someone decide between places isn't my thing. I've never complained, or even felt compelled to in a fine dining atmosphere in NOLA. I just take it all in and enjoy it. Probably because I drink too much, but hey...

are you saying fat eskimos ripping at seal blubber on the kitchen floor isn't fine dining?

ATL has kick arse scrip clubs but everything else about that city bores me.

Is that really unique and specific to Dallas?

I'd guess that almost 90% of the food Juneau residents eat is shipped in from the lower 48 on a barge.

Its unique and specific to this region. I can't think of any large city that has a food culture unique to that city which doesn't exist in the entire region. NOLA probably comes closest.

What is the best creole restuarant outside of New Orleans...Galatoire's Bistro?

No one's saying it's bad, just not top 5. And the fact that people always throw The Varsity out as a must try restaurant doesn't help. Mediocre fast food with a throwback atmosphere should not be the primary food ambassador if the ATL wants to be top 5.
