Friend,
I was thinking aloud this morning when it hit me: Tom Fitzmorris is the greatest story teller to whom I have ever listened. How many hundreds and hundreds of hours of my youth were spent listening to his savory, gravy-laden voice I'll never know. Few people have so influenced me. He went against the grain and never let the detractors get to him. He stood up for the things in which he believes. He took a passion and carved a livelihood out of a dream in a way no one before and no one since has been able to do.
Tom Fitzmorris is so much to so many of us it really, abrades me that people attack him, insult him, and do not appreciate him. Again, they are jealous. Probably jealous because he found his passion, recognized it for what it was, and found a way to make his passion his life. In that process, he shared his passion with others, building the restaurant industry and food criticism in New Orleans to heights never seen before in this country. Tom Fitzmorris is the paradigm that Thomas Jefferson unconsciously hoped would populate this beautiful land of ours when he wrote, "[All men] are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."
Tom Fitzmorris: gentleman, scholar, writer, poet, critic, romantic, Reniassance Man, artist, orator, bon vivant, and the American ideal. God called him to a new, unknown land. He heard his calling and followed it. He turned his passion into an art, dining art, the first dining artist. Thank you, Mr. Fitzmorris, for telling us your stories and letting us partake in your passion. We are all better people and a better city for it.

Tom is undoubtedly the best raconteur that I’ve ever listened to.
Mary Ann just adds an extra dimension of self deprecating humor and is a resourceful tool for what’s new in NOLA dining.
They make a phenomenal one-two combo.

He waxes on ontological nuances separating Aristotle from Thomas Aquinas in the same breath he discusses the origin of New Orleans Creole gumbo before finishing the sentence with a punctuation about Nazi submarines on the coast of Grand Isle. He is the New Orleans’ finest example of a Renaissance man.

When he used to do his Cruise deal for eat club members, I heard he got a few cabins free for the deal. He had family members bragging to other folks that they were cruising for free.
Then his cruise vacation buddy went bankrupt and screwed over some folks.

I have a friend who can speak on the same levels you describe but beyond history. Science, early childhood development, finance, taxation, music, etc.
He also played high school football, was in special forces in Vietnam Nam, was an electrician, a pastor, C level executive in a large company who now runs his own company, cooks gourmet meals, designs and landscapes his yard, and with his wife works with battered women’s shelters.
That’s more my definition.
Lest I sound like I am taking up the anti-Tom banner, I want to say that I view this part of the discussion as a tangent and to reiterate that I don’t know TF or his show.
So maybe a more general banter?
