That's different. I would give them a few bucks, just like I do if a bag boy would walk groceries to my vehicle, which they never do nor do I want them to.

The chefs arent making $3.50/hr.
In all fairness, most hostesses aren't either. They generally make at least minimum wage from what I've seen.

Personally, I would tip no less than $20 on that order, particularly if I eat there or order from there regularly, but I always tip on take out, usually a minimum of 10%.

There's a great chance that the manager/someone other than a server actually packed said meal that you are tipping for.
I would say its a safe bet that a server that has a set of tables is not packing $250 worth of food for a takeout order, unless the place is just dead. Dont go out on too much of a limb here.

When I dine in somewhere, I typically tip very well if the service is good. If it's shitty, I tip average 15%. I dont understand why you would tip someone for putting food into a bag
The guy that wont tip anything on a $250 to-go order is apparently a great tipper that will even give 15% on terrible service.

Sounds like a catering order, not your typical takeout order
Do you appreciate your large order ready when you want it?
Is everything organized and labeled?
Utensils?
Napkins?
Condiments?
The place is probably throwing everything together while also operating regular business hours. So they are doing a nice service by having a large order ready
That said, the best appreciation you can show is repeat business. Call them up and let them know you were satisfied and you'd like to keep this a mutual relationship

Thats what I figure is the norm in most places. Also a reason why I would tip on this order.
Gyno makes a great point

$250 worth of food at most places is going to take some time from start to finish, minus the cooking. Just the time on the phone with the customer could take 5 minutes.

Believe me or not. I dont care

Why did you even say this? This is exactly what I insinuated.

It's not that simple. The person doing to-go has to answer the phones and enter in the orders. The expo/CA will be the ones putting it into boxes, but then the to-go person has to go get the boxes from the kitchen, open them, make sure everything is right and is there, as well as put in to-go silverware and make sure all the sides of ranch/sauce/whatever is there too. Then label the boxes, and juggle all of the other orders. It's not like they have to process one order at a time, its multiple orders at a time.
Now imagine getting a $250 order, lets say there are 20 boxes they have to manage, as well as 4 other open orders they have to manage as well.
Easier said than done.

I thought your statement was kind of a given and wasnt really needed in your post.

Yes, but your rebuttal was actually agreeing with me, so it doesnt make too much sense for you to say that. My point was that it's more than likely not your typical server putting these orders together. That person is more than likely getting paid more. To which you responded

That's the same thing.

Paying someone $25-$30 to put food into a bag is pretty asinine.
Thinking that's all they do is equally asinine.

Is it on my credit card, or the company credit card?
Posted on 10/20/15 at 3:20 pm to dnm3305
Ah gotcha.
My response to afro I guess would have been more appropriate

I know they are doing a few extra things. They are compensated for that already.

You weren't served, but the person/people who took your order, verified that the order was correct when received from the kitchen, packed into individual boxes, labeled the boxes, and then packed it into a bag with silverware, napkins, etc... ALL in a timely fashion most definitely provided you a service.
So basically what a fast food restaurant does
quote:
If that's not worth a tip to you so be it...
It's not

I wouldn't just assume that. Every restaurant is different.
If I was a restaurant owner, I wouldn't offer the luxury of to-go ordering.

I feel like you don't really know what you're talking about, and you're just trying to justify your shitty tipping practice.

Ignorance is bliss I guess. Fast food and take out from a restaurant aren't really comparable in how the businesses are run and how your food gets to you.
