One thing that kills me about Bulldog's menu is it looks large, but really they have like 10 different variations of the chicken sandwich.. 10 different variations of a burger.. and then the other stuff. WHY?

Jon Tafer would not stand for this!

I think these 'beer bars' shouldnt put too much emphasis on food at all.

I wish more 'beer bars' put an emphasis on pairing beer with food

Absolute biggest draw for me

Agreed

And I will gladly go there and do a food menu consultation with them if they want. Just pay me in a couple beers

I have no idea what that means, but I am sincerely trying to have a legitimate conversation -- the whole point of message board -- and stand behind what I've said here.

To retrace our steps, I made an on-topic, relevant comment that you said was "bitching to bitch," which, in and of itself, is an entire post of nothing more than "bitching to bitch," or expressing your displeasure with my post. You actually added less to the conversation with the input.

From here on out, though, I'll drop it and leave it alone with you. If you're ever in Austin, let me know and I'll buy you a beer and give you a cigarette to smoke (that's a genuine offer; if you come west, hit me up on Facebook; Nicholas Persac)

He would take you up on the beer, but he's never had a cigarette in his life and I don't think he'll start now

I think the Bulldog actually needs to downsize the menu and create more eye appealing food

A lot of the menu is items like a chicken sandwich and burger done different ways. Just looked at it and 14 items on the menu are these two. They tried once to do a burger form order sheet but each item was costing money and it made burgers really expensive. They also tend to overcook their burgers.

Some of their prices are very fair but some are ridiculous. $9 for nachos with no meat. To add chicken its and extra $4. So $13 for nachos (that arent that great and tend to have a lot of burnt chips). Add guac, an extra $3. So for a chicken nacho with taxes is almost $15. Add in tip and youre approaching $20. Thats fricking laughable for chips with cheese, peppers, sour cream, pico, and chicken.

A decent beer and nachos, $25. :/

I think Bulldog owners are definitely expecting support and a pat on the back, which I think anti-smoking people should do. It is a step in the right direction.

It's for sure a step in the right direction, and it's absolutely better than allowing it indoors. As opposed to other bars, The Bulldog is in a weird spot with it because a whole draw to the bar is being able to bring your dog, which is only permitted in the smoking area.

This is just my speculation, but Bulldog has been making a lot of different changes lately.

I used to live walking distance from the Bulldog and went several times a week during that stretch of college. I loved it and thought it was a great bar. I graduated in 2010.

In the five years since, every time I've been back it's seemed emptier. My girlfriend's sister just finished up her senior year at LSU, and a while back we were in BR and looking for a bar to meet up at. When I suggested the bulldog, her sister's response (the one still in college) was along of the lines of "ew, that's a bar for old people." I was kinda surprised by that response. It wasn't ever a bar for underaged drinkers and always has people older than 21, but it never felt "old" to me when I was in college and going there.

The college girls I worked with a couple years ago informed me that Fred's is now for old people too. Who knew? I'm not even old or that far removed from that.

I'm only 24, so I didn't see Bulldog in its early years. But I remember from 18-21 (2008-2011) it was pretty popular. Bulldog was the whole reason I was ready to turn 21. All my friends that were older than me went.
By the time I started working there in August of 2013, I noticed this decline. With the exception of a few special Saturdays, Friday and Wednesday were the only busy nights, and the place was cleared by midnight. They got a crowd for trivia on Thursday, but it ended at 10 and everyone would leave.

I don't know if this is really a Bulldog issue, as I can't think of any bars that are extremely busy beyond their "special" night each week. The past few times I've been downtown outside of special events have been sad.

Are people just not going out?

Downtown can be pretty rough on weeknights. I've noticed that the Uncorked events usually get people in their mid-twenties out. Weeknights following Uncorked are pretty fun.

Maybe that's something to do with more bars in BR? I don't know if there actually are more bars now than 10 years ago, but it certainly seems like it. I think the downtown scene might have a lot do with that.

I'm working at UT now, and it's weird to me that there's not really a comparable TigerLand area here in Austin. College kids just go downtown where everyone else is, and even the "college" bars have less of an overall college feel than the TigerLand bars. I guess with so many options students can just go anywhere.

And if you're wondering anything about long-distance hiking let me know. I love talking gear and plans, though I only have 1,100 contiguous miles under my belt. I'm eyeing the 100 mile Lone Star Trail as my next "thru hike" possibility since it's close to me.

This. Plus it's more spread out now. There are more places to get good beer now, especially if you don't want to fight the smoke.

How is the beer these days at the BR Bulldog? It's pretty average in NOLA, but the bar itself is great and the location on Magazine street is about as good as it gets.

Beer is substandard at Bulldog. Tom has a better selection, especially bottled beer at Cove.

What exactly this means beyond some rotating specials, I have no idea. There are a few things I don't mind, but for the most part, I'm not huge on their food. Pretty much only eat it if I'm already going to drink and am hungry.

i really like there food for what it is.....it is great bar food. What i do not like is the damn prices.

10 bucks for a burger...with no fries. 9 bucks for nachos, but add meat and guacamole....16 bucks. Thats just outrageous. That is why i quit eating there most of the time, not because i dont like the food
