I love Parkway- believe me, I go there every weekend without fail, but I dont agree with them as number 1, especially when you dont even mention anything about the food. Everything you say about what makes it so special could apply to the bar as opposed to the food, which is great but not even my favorite po boys in the city. If it was the essence of New Orleans or whatever, they would get off their arse and start making oyster po boys again

True, although recent visits to LA Thai have been great. Merlin and his wife are very interactive with diners, and he'll make anything you ask for.
Merlin is the man... he definitely hooks you up too if he recognizes you as a regular

Venezia is one of my favorites from that area.
Used to go to Venezia all the time with my grandparents growing up. Went a few months ago. Still very good.

I see Merlin around Uptown and shoot the shite, but I haven't been to La Thai in a year, I'd guess. I need to go back. I hope he's toned down some of the "sweetness" in some of the dishes. Weird, I know. Just my opinion.

I disagree about burgers. Sure I could make my own burger. But When out for lunch and cravng a burger, its good to have options.
Most are in different areas, and the burger has always been big, not going away.

It does seem to have a pretty solid history doesn't it?
No doubt, I can make a very good burger at home. However, it's pretty tough to duplicate some of the better and more interesting ones in town.

Yeah, I make a great burger, but I'm not driving home at lunch to make one.
I had the lamb burger from Company on Monday with the bacon/cheese grits. I never cook with lamb, so it was real good.
I like all the new burger places, and still need to try out Cowbell.

Exactly and not economical or time efficient.
Meat/lettuce/specialty mayo or mustards/tomato/buns/cheese/ and whatever other ingredient they top it with/and oil for the hand cut fries. $20-$30 for all the ingredients.
From store to eating it would take over two hours.
Or, I could just call in an order, and pick up two burgers for $20 and be done with it, or just go and eat there in less than an hour.
Burgers are definitely one of the things I'm very okay with just ordering out for two people.

Where are you shopping?
Who doesn't already have mayo, ketchup, lettuce, and tomatoes at home? Those are staples always in stock in my kitchen. Ground meat? $2.99/pound = two burgers. Eight buns = $1.99. For four people, I can cook better burgers than any burger restaurant in New Orleans for ~ $2.50/person. With tax and tip at the burger fad joints, you're talking $15/person. $10 for four for better quality or $60 for four? I know my choice.
I can understand the lunch argument, but that's it. If I'm home, it's more difficult to drive somewhere than it is to fire up the grill, cook both sides for four minutes, and put it on a bun.

Parkway's is nothing special imo from a food standpoint.

you're making it out to be that cooking a great burger at home is as simple as having the ingredients. it takes knowledge and skill and practice to prepare and cook and great burger at home. not everyone possesses that.

a lot of these 'fancy' burgers use meat that is higher quality than the typical ground meat you'll find in the store. maybe it doesnt make a difference, but if you tried to make the exact duplicate of some they would likely cost more than $2.99/lb.

How much is brisket /pound? Not much more than ground chuck. Sirloin might run $3.99, but the savings are still huge compared to what you pay in a burger fad joint. I have no time for fads like "gourmet" burgers and yogurt with 1/2 oz of cut fruit for $5.

WTF are you talking about with that one? Never heard of that one. Have you given all of these new places a fair chance?
Anyway, I'm not knocking your culinary skills, but I'm skeptical that you can make a burger at home (economically in terms of time and expense) that equals some of these better burger places.

We can play this game all day long. I don't keep Any of these ingredients fresh on hand for two people. I said two. Not four like you inserted.
Ground meat + brisket = $6-$9
Good buns = $3-$4 pack
Head of lettuce = $1
Tomato = 50 cents
Onion = 50 cents
Charcoal = $5
Potatoes = $2
Gruyere cheese = $15/wedge
Fix that shite at home and most of it goes bad, I made a big mess, and it took me 3 hours and cost me 30 bucks. Why the hell wouldn't I go to pick it up?
Now tack on any other specialty topping or a specialty mayo or whatever, and that's just more shite I have to buy, more time it took me, and more of a mess I made for a burger I could've picked up in 10 minutes with no hassle and just as good or better.

Do you honestly believe these restaurants are using $15 cheese? It's either Sysco or Sam's $2.99 Gruyere cheese.
I think to prove the doubters wrong, I'm going to have a grand TulaneLSU hamburger grill-a-thon at my place.
BTW, the two best buns you will find for burgers are Bunny's white bread (don't care what the haters say) and Euro Buns: LINK Euro Buns makes the buns for Dat Dog and if you haven't tried their hamburger buns, you're missing a great joy in life.
$20 budget and I can make better burgers for 8 than any hamburger fad joint can for $120.

And most would disagree with you.
Anyways, you're obviously missing the point or just flat out refusing to acknowledge the point.
Convenience relative to price
Difference in price when serving 2 people gourmet burgers is damn near a wash and the time it took to produce both results in a hands down restaurant win.
I think I'll do a burger tonight...and pick it up.
