Houston is better at authentic mexican than Tex mex. Do yourself a favor and hit up the taco truck by the west alabama ice house. Get the el pastor taco and the fajita quesadilla and thank me later. It is sincerely the best meal under $35 I have ever had and it only costs $7.
Place is legit

True that! If it is done right it is better than authentic Mexican but just barely. Tex-Mex is meh.

Go down to Lyons Ave east of Kress just before it dead ends into the feeder road, on your left will be an old red house converted into a restaurant, if you don't speak Spanish just point at what you want on the menu, you're welcome

Those are usually the best places to eat for mexican.
I could use some lengua tacos now

I hear on a good day, a gump will actually throw caution to the winds and sprinkle PEPPER on their food, which is either fried or grilled. Black pepper, mind you.

not slamming the op, but i seriously doubt most folks have ever had authentic mexican ... it's very rarely wrapped in a tortilla ... tex mex isn't overrated at all ... simple comfort food ...

I've tried a couple different, well regarded places in Houston. And I'm incredibly disappointed.
That's because you're in Houston instead of in Austin. That's like having "authentic Cajun" food in New Orleans instead of in Lafayette.
I always tell people that if the table has a table cloth then it isn't real Cajun food. Well, maybe a cheap paper table cloth if you're trying to impress.

I'm curious. What exactly makes Austin Tex-Mex more "authentic" than Houston Tex-Mex other than that Austin is seen as "more hip?" Mind you, Houston is a top 5 food city in the US with tons of Mexicans.

lol ... arguing over 'authentic tex mex' ... austin keeps it weird, right? ...

That's what I'm wondering too
