I'm looking for a non-touristy must-try indigenous seafood eatery in Tampa, something like Joe's Stone Crab in Miami. I'd like to sample some local stone crab claws, conch fritters and grouper so I'm looking for suggestions. I'll be at the mercy of taxi service, so nothing too far (Clearwater and St. Pete are out for example.) I don't care if it's a hole in the wall or someplace that's pricey.

Whatcha got?

I gotta tell ya, as a Tampa resident the seafood here is weak. Chain restaurants are really what Tampa is known for. Tampa is the birthplace of Hooters, Outback, Checkers, and more...

Urbanspoon is usually my go-to list for restaurants in Tampa. It hasnt led me astray yet..

I can vouch for Rumba Island and Salt Rock... Both are very good...

I checked out the menus and both of your suggestions looked worthy, although both venues would be a bit of a taxi ride out of the area. I'd be on business downtown. Last time I was there I ate at Thai Thani at Channelside by the Aquarium, which wasn't bad, but looking for a gem.

I think most of the FL restaurants on the gulf coast serve grouper. Great fish and "low maintenance", i.e., won't be that hard to find a good restaurant.

If Pass-a-Grille and St. Pete weren't out of reach I could recommend the Hurricane and Silas.

If staying downtown and willing to try something other than seafood I'd recommend Yummy House Chinese (try the duck) off Waters Ave and the Taco Bus off of Henderson for Mexican. This is where the locals in the know get good cheap eats.

Some others... La Teresita for Cuban cuisine, La Ideal is the best Cuban sandwich in Tampa, the Columbia for Spanish or Berns for a steak are also solid choices.

Thank you. These are the suggestions I'm looking for, that being a local's view.

I'll be goin to Tampa at the end of may, so this thread caught my eye. Is there any particular food item that Tampa is known for? Any establishments that are unique to the area that are musts for a visitor in the Tampa/St. Pete/Clearwater area?

Tampa does a few things pretty well. The Spanish and Cuban cuisine is our greatest strength. The definitive Tampa restaurants to me are the Columbia in Ybor city for Spanish and Berns Steakouse. Berns gets the nod for the experience and the wine cellar tour.

Tampa has some good Asian cuisine too especially Thai food as there a number of really good ones.

Otherwise Tampa is pretty much a wasteland of chain restaurants, pizza joints and order by picture Chinese take out locations.
