Dont put the ginger on top of any of your food, someone said that nonsense earlier.

This has happened at Koto and Ichiban.

Guess it all depends on the guy behind the counter.

If you are a sushi virgin, don't get eel! That shite has a strong taste and could ruin your first sushi experience.

I'm also a sushi beginner.. Has anyone tried the sushi at leblanc's in prairieville/galvez? they are handmade and look good, but i've never decided to bite or know which one to get

sushi from a grocery store just sounds funny to me. Go to a restaurant and have it first. THEN if you get brave, try a grocery store, though I'm not completely sure I'd recommend that.

Apparently the inclusion of wasabi and soy sauce (at least to the extent that people use it here in the states) is not at all how sushi is eaten in japan. supposedly, in japan only a drop or two of soy sauce is used per slice of sushi (whereas, I have seen people literally dunk their sushi in a bowl of soy sauce here)
I tend to agree with not over doing the condiments on the sushi, but you can't just assume that authentic Japanese = good to Americans. They have a completely different palate in Japan. They serve pickled vegetables with everything and desert is often very different, like a "sweet" cherry tomato or some pastry with a "sweet" red bean paste. That'll really throw you off when you try it, eating something we're so used to as savory, mushed up red beans, and getting a sweet flavor out of it.

They are also fanatical about mayo. They serve it on tons of shite there.

I agree completely.
Some of the shite that the Japenese eat wouldn't even be tried by 99% of US eaters.
But having said that, what's the point of sushi if all you taste is wasabi and soy?

Depends on the grocery store. Many have old Japanese people that prepare it fresh daily. Others are mass produced at a central location in town, probably by a bunch of Mexicans.

Yes, fresh is best with sushi.

Tuna Box is my favorite

I am this way. I guess I just got lucky to like "sushi." First roll I had was the Johnny Roll. Once I got over the whole, "I'm eating sushi, I'm eating raw fish" belief, nothing was stopping me.
Next time I went to a restaurant, I sat at the bar and told them just give me raw stuff. Haven't looked back since. I am still amazed about how uneducated the masses are concerning the food.
You mean that you like sashimi.
