We pack our kids' lunches nearly every day, but I'd like to have the option to let them eat a tray once and a while, but school lunches have really gone to shite.

When I was a kid in Louisiana, I remember lots of real, cooked lunches. I'm a firm believer that proper, at least half-proper, nutrition translates to a better mind at school.

Here's my kids' school lunch plan for Sept:

Commas separate weeks

Monday: Hot Dog, Pig in Blanket, Corndogs, Hotdog
Tuesday: Cheeseburger, every week (other option stromboli)
Wed: Nachos, every week (burrito other option)
Thurs: Chicken Nuggets, every week (2 weeks have pork roast option)
Fri: Pizza, every week

These are accompanied by a token veggie or tiny salad, and usually more cheese-covered carbs.

I work in CPG foods, and it is hard as shite for us to get items approved for school lunches. How do these items get approved as STANDARD lunches?

I can see these as occasional treats, but this menu looks like a recipe for childhood obesity

That's terrible.

My elementary school had some good options. At 4th grade, we had a salad and nacho bar as an option to the regular lunch.

High school we had plenty of options to eat terrible or healthy

No complaints here. My daughter loves her school lunches. Red beans and rice is her favorite. Chicken fajitas is a close second

I don't want to live in the past but when I was in elementary in the 80's and 90's, we had red beans, gumbo, dirty rice, jambalaya, etc.

I remember it being really good, and it must have been pretty cost-efficient, too.

Where were you in the 1990s (at least)?

I still remember the cheese stuffed fish sandwiches back then.

The portions aren't big enough for obesity. At least they weren't when I went to school.

They have gumbo too. Haven't had jambalaya yet but I wouldn't be surprised if they do.

My 2 kids are pretty picky but they both eat the school lunches. Baked Chicken and dirty rice, red beans and smoked sausage, pizza bread, they eat pretty good.

Tuesday- Country fried steak, Rice and gravy, green beans, carnival cookie

Wednesday- Chicken and dumplins, lima beans, biscuit, peach cobbler

Thursday- Orange chicken over rice, peas and carrots, salad, chocolate chip cookies

Friday- Fox's pizza (cheese or pepperoni), bread sticks, salad, Frozen lemonade

My kids attend a day care that is attached to a private school. Their lunch is nothing outstanding, but they eat well and there is a lot of variety in there.

They gave us Octobers menu this morning..

Commas separate weeks

Monday: Jambalaya, Ravioli, Beef Tacos, Spaghetti
Tuesday: Nachos, Grilled Cheese, Stewed Chicken, Baked Potato Bar
Wednesday: Steak Fingers, Salisbury Steak, Dirty Rice, Beef Stew
Thuesday: White Beans & Ham, Red Beans & Sausage, Pinto Beans & Sausage, White Beans & Ham, Pinto Beans & Sausage (WTF is with beans on thursday??)
Friday: Corn Dogs, Fried Chicken Sandwich, Pizza, Fried Chicken Sandwich, Hamburgers

This is pretty similar to what I remember from high school, except we had crappy pizza available every day.

My kids still get them every now and again.

The best thing we had was peanut butter squares.

Went to Catholic School. We had fake fish sticks every Friday, lent or not. Served em with Brussel Sprouts. We called em "elephant bugars".

For more info on the school lunch program and it's problems/challenges I suggest watching the 'Fed Up' documentary. It's pretty interesting stuff.

School cafeteria food has been bad since I went to school in the 90s.

The reason? Required "food groups" in order to get funding. It's crazy. You can have vendors coming in cooking amazing meals, but if it doesn't meet standards, it isn't reimbursable.. and schools heavily rely on the money they get reimbursed for serving "proper" meals.

It is a fricked system for sure. Schools where every family pays out of pocket for their kid's lunch are where it's at.
