Most of these will be east austin which is just across I-35. Sammataro is on the east side, too.
Some of the places below are trucks...
Old school tex mex, good breakfasts at these places too.
Cisco's, Joe's Bakery, Juan in a Million, Tamale House East, Granny's
Vacquero Taquero
BBQ
(Franklin's is good but is a time suck)
Micklethwait, Rolling Smoke, La BBQ, Terry Black's, Interstellar isn't near downtown but it's great, KG but it's not exactly traditional bbq (if you're into goat or lamb it's a must hit place)
Loro already mentioned is a partnership between Aaron Franklin and the guy who started the city's best sushi (Uchi). Really amazing food. Asian flavors mixed with smoked.
ATX Cucina, a little more upscale than trucks but still casual. Great mexican ( not tex mex). They have a happy hour with some tacos available only at the bar. A great first stop if you want to pop around into a few places vs a meal. The rest of their menu is great too.
Casino El Camino, dive bar with an amazing burger (as seen on TV a ton). They do happy hour all day with drinks for around $3 which is crazy for downtown.
Seems you're into pizza, if you end up on South Congress, grab some slices at Home Slice. Usually considered the best in town. They have a killer italian sandwich too.
There's so much to choose from and new places opening all the time. Ask way if there's something in particular you're looking for.

The Loro indoor and outdoor space kicks arse too, plenty of parking.

Forgot to mention Arbor food truck park on E 12th. 6 or so trucks, tons of tables under shade trees, BYOB.
