re: So why did Marcellos close?

The story I heard was the lease was up for Marcellos and they decided to take it all back to Lafayette.
Cuban hired the guy who did all the ordering for Marcellos. I'm not sure who exactly pitched the idea to Cuban after Marcellos closed but they decided to give it a go.
Good call because Marcellos probably got $100 a month on retail beer purchases from me when they had homebrew supplies. Before the homebrew supplies I never went to Marcellos.

Same here. I almost always left with a few beers when I went to get supplies.

And it was a Mexican restaurant for a year or so but it closed up too.

And someone brave enough to open one

The Baton Rouge home brewing scene has been growing in recent years. The Jones Creek store survived for a while despite what appeared to be a pretty half arse effort. If whomever opened a store got the attention of the three clubs in town and worked it hard I'm sure they would have a shot. Brewstock appears to be doing a pretty good job of drumming up biz from Baton Rouge.

Overheard one of the owners of Calandros talking to CJ the other night about going into the beer equipment business. Seemed like a serious conversation.

Hmm. I believe it. I know Cuban is jumping on it, won't be surprised to see Calandro's do the same. And why not?

They had a little grocery store in SD that had a shite ton of good beer and its own little homebrew section off to the side like this.

I'm not so sure of this. Assuming Calandro's does this in store, where would they possibly have room?

isn't making your own beer a pretty expensive start up proposition and pretty easy to suck at if you don't know what you are doing ?

<$100 bucks in equipment and some light reading should have you brewing a decent beer.

The basic start up for extract brewing isn't expensive. Like most hobbies, it gets much more expensive the deeper you get.
And I agree...Calandro's would have to take on new space to do that.

Ha, that's so clean. I'm used to Brewstock where you almost need a dust mask to walk in there, but I love it.

What was the name of the place in Baton Rouge on Dallas maybe? I think just "The Homebrew Shop?" What a dump. I spend a lot of time and money in that dump.
