I have tried the snake charcoal method for smoking on my kettle but can’t seem to make it work. I make a 2 x 1 snake with a water pan in the middle and light about 10 coals on one side. I have both vents cracked halfway. I get about 4-5 hours out of it and all the coals are burned.

That’s about right. You can get 5-6 hrs out of it. Stick whatever you’re smoking in the oven at that point if it’s not done.

I saw someone post on here they smoked a brisket for 10 hours on a kettle. I’m curious how they got that much time.

Maybe so. I’ve never attempted going that long. I assume you have to add more fuel

Replace the burnt coals with fresh so the snake keeps eating its tail, so to say.

Pretty sure I have gotten close to 14 hours at 225-275 using the minion method. I have also just mixed in 30 or so lit coals and spread them out amongst unlit coals with decent results. Mine is modded with a stainless door and heat gaskets on the door and lid.

I can get 8 hours easy but as someone said, it depends on the length of the coals. I also do 2 rows double stacked. As far as my vents I got half open on top and fully open on the bottom.

For longer smokes you have to add stacked of coals ahead of the ones burning so that the coals never die out. If you did this and kept up you could literally keep it going forever

Done this about 6 times, and longest I’ve gotten without adding coals is right under 12 hours - 2x2 stack all the way around except for maybe 6 inches. Kingsford bricks with a chunk of oak every foot or so (about 3 total) or chips spread across the entire thing. Bottom vents all the way open, top vents between 1/2 and 1/4 open. Temp stayed 230-240.

Doubtful. You’ll die at some point.
