re: Slim's Pizzeria - New Birmingham restaurant

Had some friends go tuesday night as well. They got the chicken pesto and the fennel sausage pizza. Chicken pesto they said was good but not great, mainly because the chicken was just kind of basic. The rest of the pizza was good, chicken just didn't do much. Fennel sausage one they said was outstanding. So, if you guy's get a chance to go, the two favorites so far have been the Hot Honey pepperoni and the fennel sausage pizza.
Cheesecake is great too. Apparently one of the guys that works there had the recipe and brought it to them when he heard about the restaurant. He makes it and also helps wait tables, buses, etc. They loved the recipe so put it on the menu.

Just catching up on this thread from yesterday, and I agree that our sports bars aren't that great. Paramount is good if you're near downtown. The bar area is nice, lots of high top tables around, and plenty of TVs. I usually go to Baumhower's. The one in Patton Creek (behind the Galleria) did close, but it was when they opened the one in Vestavia on 31. It isn't the best location, being between the WalMart neighborhood market and new city pool/park/ballfields, as the only other thing by it is an Orthodontist office and a Dunkin Donuts, but its 5 minutes from my house and I've watched a few games there.
Doodle's is great as well. When I moved up here after college they had a little stand near our apartment, by the old Western grocery store in the Rocky Ridge area. Their new place, which isn't that new anymore, is much larger and has a big grassy area to hang out. One of my kids had a class party there last year when they were doing virtual school. A way for the kids to meet in person and have fun.

I rarely make it over to Hoover. I avoid it like the plague
I work over off Cahaba Valley, so the Walkons was a nice addition for a sports bar out there. If there was a Walkons downtown, that place would print money.

I live nearby and it's doing fine. Anytime I drive by it on the weekends, there are people waiting outside for a table, no matter what time of day it is.

Oh it is doing great where it is too. I just meant something like that downtown would kill.

Same here. I live right on the border of Vestavia and Hoover. There are only a few places I go to in Hoover, and our fave Mexican place is one of them. Other than that I stick to my area.

Y'all had the sandwiches at Ore Mercantile in Avondale yet? Best sandwiches in town, but they're pricey.

They built it next to Wald Park on purpose. They print money in that location. Vestavia on Hwy 31 is a wasteland of food with the exception of the Diplomat Deli and BistroV.
I forgot about WalkOn's. That's not too far from us, but we never go there. It's always packed and I didn't like the food very much.

Yea, I'd never go to Walkons for dinner or if there was a wait, it just gets too crowded. It is great for bar food, but that is all it is. The burgers are decent, buffalo chicken wrap is good as is the chicken sandwich, cajundilla is good, nacho fries are good. Lunch is easy to get a table. It is absolutely not worth going to if you have to wait even 15 minutes for a table.

Sat at the wine bar in the back last night. Ordered one of their 15 specials which was short rib pot pie with the bone sticking out with all the marrow. Was pretty damn tasty

I was there last week and was curious about that dish.
My go to there is the 14oz ribeye. It is wonderful. As good as that place is though, you can go and eat for pretty reasonable. The spaghetti & sunday sauce is an absolutely delicious dish that is massive, for like $16. The Lasagna is fantastic for like $14. We've had date nights there for under $50, also ones pushing $200, just depends on how the night goes
Also, highly recommend the fiocchi appetizer. It is a really nice little dish.

City center seems to be expanding pretty well though. My end of 31 is all of the chains, Captain D's, Arby's, Hardee's, etc. And then there's Milo's and Brusters. I just wish there was more by that WalMart besides a Zaxby's, Baumhowers, and Dunkin. Only so many travel ball teams can cram into Baumhowers at once.

Ate at GianMarco's a couple of weeks ago. Place just isn't as good as it used to be. My last 3 or 4 visits over the last 5 or so years have mostly been underwhelming for the price. I always order one of the nightly specials.
To be fair, a couple of weeks ago I got overruled on Helen because the group wanted GianMarco's, so I walked in kinda bitter already. We did have a great app from the specials. A Brushetta with prosciutto, fig reduction, and goat cheese.

Other than that, it's mostly chains.
It blows my mind at the shortage of bars in the Birmingham area. I grew up on the west side of Birmingham and 30 years ago you could bar crawl from basically Bessemer to downtown on bessemer super hwy.

Yea if I am wanting to watch a game at a bar I usually go to the grocery brewpub or paramount. I guess with all the breweries there’s not much market for sports bars? I dk

If you are on the Hoover/Vestavia line on Hwy 31, then you are in close proximity to some of the best hole-in-the-wall places in all of Bham.
1. Wingz R King on 31.
2. Pollo Lucas on Lorna.
3. Silver Coin on Lorna.
4. Blue Pacific on Lorna.
5. Archie’s formerly Golden Rule on 31.
6. Tortuga’s on 150.
7. Jake’s Soul Food on 150.
Lorna Rd is a treasure trove of cheap ethnic places. Truly underrated and under appreciated area of Bham.
ETA: Diplomat Deli on 31 in Vestavia. Get the chili and grilled cheese. That might be my last meal request. Seriously.

Bump.
Finally got around to this place. Have the meatball appetizer coming and the honey pizza as well. Y’all were right about beer options: one pale ale and one IPA. Although, it is my favorite local pale ale.
Will advise.
