Shrimp boil with a 6 quart pot

Thinking of doing this tonight for the wife and I since the kids are staying with grandparents. Was going to use the side burner on my Blackstone. Not cooking a huge quantity, but will this size pot handle a few corn cobs and potatoes, with maybe 2-3 lbs of shrimp and some sausage? I've only helped out when we were cooking for a crowd, and usually had a pretty large stock pot to use. Also any recommendations on how much seasoning would be great.

I use about 2lbs of powder (half of a sack size bag) and between 4 and 8oz of liquid in a 30qt pot when I do shrimp.

I don't actually boil my shrimp, they sort of just soak in hot water for about 5 min. So I'll bring up the water to a boil, drop shrimp, cut heat, let soak until done (which is about 5 min). So given short soak times, you need extra seasoning. You could adjust seasoning to your pot based on those numbers. (I fill that 30qt pot half full, so 15qts of water. Your seasoning to water ratio is linear)

So what I do is cook veggies first with a lower amount of seasoning. Then add seasoning to what I have above, then add shrimp for soak.

It’s gonna be a tight fit. I use The Cajun Ninja’s recipe and he starts with 2 gallons of water for 2-3lbs plus the fixins.

I did 2.5 pounds and mushrooms only for my wife and on Monday.

I think I did 3 to 4 quarts of water, 1 cup of power and 4 oz of liquid.

You should be able to look at a pot and know if it’s big enough. This ain’t common core. And It’s easy to eyeball seasoning for a pot of shrimp. Come on, man, at some point you have to cook on your own. Pour some crab boil in, cook, soak, and check every few minutes.

You really should post less if this is your answer to someone who asks a legitimate question on the Food & Drink Board seeking help on how to cook a dish.

At some point, you have to stop asking for measurements and recipes and just COOK. Too many people are afraid to cook and need someone to reassure them. Cooking is fun and everyone should try things on their own and learn from it. That’s how we get better and that’s how new recipes and methods get developed.

Look at the pot. Just look at it. Does it look big enough? Seriously, you can’t tell? We are taking boiling a couple of pounds of shrimp, not wondering if 50 pounds will fit.

Reread my initial post. I’ve cooked plenty of shrimp but it has always been in a large stock pot outside. Where we barely fill it halfway with water. I was just asking if that size pot would be large enough, or if there needed to be more room. I don’t want to stuff it so full that nothing has room to move around, and I was mainly asking about seasoning. My dad taught me how to cook and I cook probably 90% of the meals at home. But living in central Alabama I rarely cook seafood. A quick thread to ask those that live near the coast and do this quite often is what I was after.

I have been thinking this since he showed up on the board.

He ( SixthAndBarone ) is by far the worst contributor to this board that I have ever seen.

Wife ended up feeling a little sick the other night, so we did the boil on Saturday night instead. Turned out great. My oldest kids are coming around to seafood, and want to keep expanding what they eat. My daughter loves shrimp any way, and my son likes them butterflied and fried. He tried the boiled ones I peeled for him but enjoyed the sausage and corn more.

When I went to the store to get groceries, they had some good looking Salmon in the seafood case, so I grabbed one of those two and cooked that last night. Daughter loved it. The wife said the plate was worthy of Instagram. I cooked it in the oven with some white wine, lemon slices, and capers. Most of the fish my daughter has had were ones I caught, and she wasn't sure how she would like the salmon, but ate all of her portion and went back for more.
